Eurovision 2013: An American in London

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

  • thecheat

    Masterful!

  • Anonymous

This would have been perfect music for an early nineties point and click adventure.

  • UnnecessaryUmlaut

    The guy’s got range.

    ::

  • irksome

Pardon me while I jab a pencil into my neck.

  • freshacconci

Must all memes eventually converge? Where are the cats?

    • irksome

I’d better make it a Blackwing then.

  • bardfinn

This only serves to support my hypothesis that the entire decade of the 1970′s was a worldwide LSD-induced CIA mind-control experiment.

Someone commandeer a TARDIS and go tell that man to move his jaw and lips.

      You’re only partially correct: http://plif.courageunfettered.com/archive/wc102.gif

Damn. It looks like they employ some sort of anti-linking referrer bullshit…

  • Inventorjack

It worries me that I like this so much. I’ve now listened like 6 times.

  • Jonathan Badger

The whole “Trolololo” meme is 1000x less bizarre if you’ve ever seen an episode of Lawrence Welk. It wasn’t just the Soviets that found this sort of thing (unironically) entertaining. Westerners did too.

    • checkersspeech

… Or a Lawrence Welk parody on SNL, they’re pretty spot on. But frankly the LW production values had it all over the Trololo type thing.

      • Ted8305

The Soviets had more hipster cred.

This would be perfect to go with a Mario-like video game starring Eduard Hil!

  • merreborn

There are ringtone and mp3 links in the youtube video’s description:

  • igpajo

I find myself wondering why I just watched that. Definitely a meme that’s grown a bit stale.

  • Razzabeth

    WANT. (as a ringtone).

P.S. why does the Boing Boing login screen have such a funky old geocities background?

  • BDiamond

Oh, you kiddies with your bleep-tastic “8-bit” this and “chiptune” that.

Actual ARTISTS, a-r-t-i-s-t-s, were putting out wonderfully cheesy synthploitational pop tune covers back in the 60s and 70s. Using wall-sized analog synths. And they frequently sounded just like this.

Dick Hyman, Hugo Montenegro, Enoch Light, Walter/Wendy Carlos when he/she was slumming, Isao Tomita’s first album (Electric Samurai), etc., etc., etc.

You’re cute when you think bloopsic was invented in the 80s for Atari and NES game soundtracks and then refer to that as “back in the day.”

(And yes, I specifically left out pioneers like Raymond Scott, Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley because they were doing more than just the bloopy stuff.)(Carlos, too, but really, did we need “Eleanor Rigby” on that by Request album?)

Okay, I’m just being a pontificatin’ douche. This really did amuse me.

  • Chentzilla

Turned that off, only to hear it still playing in the background. It turned out to be Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on my DS.

  • the philosopher

all video i was waiting for the freaky laughing part to come. to my dismay it never came. but i won’t be a troll, i really did like it!

  • Alex_M

Awesome.Eduard Khil for the win! (Seriously, he seems to be an awesome guy)

And yeah, it’s not really _that_ far-out for being 70′s stuff. I don’t really see how he’s much different than, say, Heino.
