Nice poster for The Fantasy of the Deer Warrior, a 1961 movie from Taiwan. The trailer has some nice singing and costumes, too. Poster tagline: "Natural scenes, Animal (beast) suits, Taiwanese fairy tale movie".

Thanks for reminding me that I need to finish watching Princess Raccoon, which I saw only part of at a film festival a few years ago.

    Soft porn for Furries?

  • Gendun

I’m forcefully reminded of the execrable “Gentleman Broncos,” a film I wish I could unsee.

    Let the yiffing commence!

Taiwan is full of nut-bar stuff like this. After the progressive revolution on the mainland anybody who could read or was otherwise suspected of engaging in non-stoop labour was slated for the concentration camps. Given the hyper-high mortality rates in those places anybody who could get got to Taiwan where the government dumped a ton of subsidies on them to differentiate themselves from the mainland. This resulted in, amongst other things, a cable channel devoted entirely to Kung-Fu puppet shows.

Another equally silly deer-themed movie, The Legend of Milu Deer: Princess Yoyo, made it to mainland Chinese theatres last year – I was the (unhappily) unpaid translator of the English subtitles for this technically deficient 3D animated fantasy about a herd of magic deer pitted against humans. Royal deer Yoyo becomes a human girl after eating a strange herb and falls in love with the Prince, who doesn’t really want to slaughter all the wildlife in the area.

Aw, they took the preview down.

    Here’s a link to the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUDGfeO9-kI#t=00m38s

      Aww…no fair with the Rick…er, Bambi-roll.

Anyway, I liked the melody in the original.

I also wonder what the actors were thinking. “Whatever. As long as I get paid for this”, or “Remember, we’re doing it for the kids.”

Taiwan also has the most open gay scene in Asia. So, its no surprise to me that they accepted Furries a long time ago. Just because you’re Furry doesn’t mean you’re not filial.

  • Megapope

Holy crap where can I get a print of that poster? It’s amazing.

  • Stefan Jones

It’s interesting that the poster makes it clear that the movie has people in animal costumes rather than taking an artistic leap and showing anthropomorphic animal folk. Truth in advertising!

  • aaron_in_sf

Looks eerily like my Wednesday night at Burning Man this year, about oh an hour after we ate the special chocolates.

  • Mithrilmojo

Now this is my kind of LARPing.

    • knoxblox

Yeah, it just struck me that this is a movie devoted to Furries.

Kinda dig the curvy hips on the man-deer

    • TK

      A man-deer commandeer?

  • bassplayinben

    Somebody likes to draw hips.
