Given the hyper-high mortality rates in those places anybody who could get got to Taiwan where the government dumped a ton of subsidies on them to differentiate themselves from the mainland. This resulted in, amongst other things, a cable channel devoted entirely to Kung-Fu puppet shows. Taiwan is full of nut-bar stuff like this.
