Wayn3w sez, "Useful and funny graphic (poster available) on choosing fonts. Look at the path to 'Comic Sans' for instance."

So You Need A Typeface (Thanks, Wayn3w, via Submitterator)

  • What size type would you need to reach the Moon from the Earth ...
  • 3*TYPE text leaps out at you
  • Helvetica tee is type-nerd-bait
  • Helveticookies
  • Hairy type
  • House Industries "Studio Lettering" font collection
  • France's anti-piracy goon squad pirates the font in its logo ...
  • Painful font made from pinched skin and clothespegs
  • Droid Sans Mono, a sweet monospace font
  • Font fussbudgets fume over use of Papyrus in Avatar subtitles ...
  • Measuring font ink-use by hand-drawing sample text with ball-point ...
  • Planet of the Apes font
  • Cthulhu fonts

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

    Comic Sans forever!

  • Anonymous

Well I guess that explains I usually have the OCR ball loaded on my Selectric II.

After years of graphic design my flowchart became decidedly minimalist. “Is the client providing fonts?” No? —-> Helvetica

  • shawnhcorey

If you are displaying on a monitor, use “sans-serif”. If you are printing it, use “serif”. If you displaying something like command-line interface, use “monospace”. Those three fonts are all you will ever need.

  • Mr. Sleepy

BoingBoing is a Comic Sans sort of site (if ya know what I mean) :/

  • morcheeba

Invitation, handwritten, but not fancy …

  • bobkat

    What, no Papyrus?!
    Awwwwwww, c’mon!

  • daemonsquire

Careful now: y’all wouldn’t like Comic Sans when it’s mad. Or maybe you would.

  • phlavor

I’ve currently got a stupid amount of fonts installed. I’m going to pare them down using this as a guide. Just a guide, mind you.

  • dfletcher

Riiight. Now when I need to design a book, logo, newspaper, or invitation, I know exactly where to go! My wife Laura, the designer in the family ;-)

Seriously, this isn’t even a very good layout. Look at Akzidenz Grotesk. So easily, that section above it could have moved down, and this one placed next to “how about something classic” where it belongs. There’s other similarly confusing crossing lines across this thing.

I give it a “C minus”, not super creative, not many base categories (I’m designing a game, damnit!) and messy.

  • geekd

Right from the start, no option for “advert” or “band flier” or “web page header” or anything *I* need to choose a font for. Font nazis, fuck off.

    • Nelson.C

“You cried when watching Terminator”. Yeah, this is so to be taken seriously, I don’t think. Lighten up, for pity’s sake. If there’s anything I hate worse than Nazis, it’s anti-nazi nazis.

  • SFedor

Very cool concept, though the layout and flow had me lost in no time and could use some tweaking to be more effective. As a random school project – thumbs up!

  • a_user

I like the hidden comic sans :D
