This act isn’t suicidal because of the way she applied the caustic to her face (versus ingesting it). It is also not typical self-injury because she didn’t try to hide it (versus using it as a coping method). I would guess that this would be parasuicide, since she knew it wasn’t going to kill her and she was willing to make it public. This was an act of desparation. If she has done previous parasuicidal acts, it could imply that she does these acts for a manipulative purpose (though she may not see it as that)–for example, to get her ex to call, her family to pay attention, etc.

Why she felt that she had to blame it on a black woman in Starbucks is another good question. Maybe she played on her and our cultural biases and believed that nobody would believe a white woman or man in a Starbucks would attack her with a caustic, thus opening her story to more scrutiny. That was a pretty despicable thing to say despite her underlying desperation.

Then again, I’m assuming a mental illness. Mental illness doesn’t explain assholes (excl. sociopaths). She could very well be just an asshole who thought this would be more fun than having a normal face and that she could profit from it.

And to nitpick, it is no longer an acid attack, it is a faked caustic attack.

I think we’re talking way borderline personality here.

I feel very bad for her parents. They gave a very heartfelt apology to the public, and are trying to return the money that was donated for her care.

I really hope that she gets sentenced to court-supervised long-term therapy as the resolution of whatever charges they press against her.

Regardless of the attention-seeking aspects of her performance – Munchausen syndrome? – nobody pours acid on their face without some severe self-hatred and alienation from their body.

I hate the cliche “it’s its own punishment” but really, how is any kind of jail sentence going to compare to the harm she’s just inflicted on herself?

Why didn’t she use real acid, and splashed it on her own face? Might have to sacrifice a few stray dogs to work out the concentration and quantity required to maim but not kill.

Still not buying the story.

How is it plausible, that one is going to commit suicide by carefully applying acid to one’s face without the eyes? After all, if one were committing suicide, one would DRINK acid, not carefully apply it to one’s face.

She’s still trying to find sympathy by painting herself a victim of mental problems.

I thought it was pretty interesting that, so far, I’ve only read about one news report on this where the reporter asked the cops about the black women they’d been detaining and questioning before this chick confessed.
