I live one town over from Yarmouth and haven’t yet been to the museum/house. This reminds me that I should make it over there soon! And the Cultural Center of Cape Cod is really cool – it’s in an old bank building, complete with a giant vault.

Thanks for giving the Edward Gorey House a higher profile. Also, the operation is a labor of love, but Gorey’s friends and family won’t be there forever, and even a small place like that is expensive to run. For example, there’s an upper story that has his library and work area, but they can’t open it until they can put in a wheelchair lift in it.

So the more visibility and the more members the museum can get, the more likely it can be a going concern.

This museum is a must see if you are on the Cape. It was truly sad and beautiful when I stopped by last month. I fell in love with his art and storytelling when I was young after the first time I saw his intro to the MYstery series. I hated the show, but the intro was amazing. At the museum, they have the intro on a loop in the back room. I stood there, mesmo’ed. And the gift shop has some awesome things too. Your kids can search the museum for all the Tinies which are hidden, each recreating their demise.

Ah yes, now I remember a couple years back him mentioning something about making the vane as one time thing for the museum, but not getting anybody requesting more.
He probably still has the pattern for his cool CNC machine, so give him a buzz.

Gorey’s been my hero since I was seven. Other than Jabberwocky, his are the only verses I ever bothered to commit to memory.

Few indeed are the times I can approach a baptismal font without murmuring to myself, “The babe with a cry brief and dismal…”

I don’t get invited to many christenings anymore.

Part of me wonders how the very private Gorey would feel about rubberneckers invading his home. That said, if I lived anywhere near C ape Cod I’d be there in a New York minute. At least there’s the book ELEPHANT HOUSE for comparison.

Charlotte, you’re my kind of person. I’ve used that particular one to lull my children to sleep, and also whenever I’ve needed to help set up live microphones or PA setups, rather than a generic “testing one-two” thing, I’ve always just intoned in a properly stentorian fashion, “It was already Thursday, but his Lordship’s artificial limb could not be found…” etc.

I just visited the museum last month. It was sad and beautiful. In the back room was a video loop from the Mystery show’s trailer. When I was a kid, that intro mesmo-ed me. I did not like the show, just the intro. It took me back. You MUST stop there if you are onthe Cape.
