KevinVanCamper sez, "The new documentary, DECONSTRUCTING DAD, exploring the personal life and career of the late composer & inventor Raymond Scott is now available on DVD, with 20 minutes of bonus features. The film, which was directed by Scott's only son, features movie-music legend JOHN WILLIAMS ('STAR WARS'), producer HAL WILNER, MARK MOTHERSBAUGH of DEVO, jazz clarinetist DON BYRON, archival footage of EDWARD R. MURROW, and DJ SPOOKY, aka Paul D. Miller."

DECONSTRUCTING DAD: Raymond Scott documentary film by Stan Warnow (Thanks, KevinVanCamper, via Submitterator!)

  • Raymond Scott: The First 100 Years
  • Raymond Scott tribute concert footage
  • Raymond Scott's Powerhouse performed by harmonica quintet sextet ...
  • Raymond Scott vinyl toy
  • New Raymond Scott album: The Unexpected

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Woooo! I’m so “jazzed” this film is on DVD cuz I kept missing it at the festivals in CA! Long-live Raymond Scott, master of so many trades!

Co-producer Jeff Winner has passionately brought Raymond to the forefront of today’s musical culture and has finally introduced Scott’s life to the world.

EH: It’s evident from Spooky’s appearances the film (and yes, they are brief), and especially the 2 bonus scenes with him on the DVD, that he’s a knowledgeable devotee of Raymond Scott’s accomplishments. He makes good points, and supports them well. So, IMO, it was appropriate to “invite” him.

I’m sure the film is good, but DEAR GOD hire a better graphic designer next time.

octo: You’re crazy. I LOVE that design!

Via the often-interesting “News From Me” blog, a cover of Scott’s arguably most well-known composition.

Saw this doc at a screening in LA — it’s fantastic from start to finish. The bonus features look good, so I just ordered the DVD too.

  • EH

I hate to be fighty, but can’t anybody document music in a serious fashion anymore without inviting DJ Spooky over to stink up the place? The guy adds nothing to knowledge or understanding, ever. Maybe since he’s listed last he only has like a 20sec snippet. That might be OK, all things considered.

Agreed, Kevin, I think Spooky is a good fit for this film.
