I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

    Shopped. Do you want me to ACTUALLY laser engrave a banana?

    • racerabbit

      That’s a trick question, right? I mean, LOOK at it!

  • Anonymous

    If the banana is real, is the image of the hand holding it a composite? Because, leaving aside the believability of the engraving, the hand-to-banana ratio seems rather off, unless its a freakishly large banana, or a very small man’s hand. Additionally, the areas where the thumb and pinky meet the banana look suspect. Not a single finger overlaps the banana in a convincing way. That’s why I think: Piltdown banana.

    • Anonymous

      @anon I don’t understand why you think this must be a man’s hand.

  • Anonymous

    As the maker of both the photo and the banana, the skeptical remarks sure made me smile. I posted some (what I hope will be considered) conclusive evidence regarding the authenticity of the banana (and hand!) on our blog. Won’t link-spam the comment section, so just follow the link in this post and check the top.

  • efergus3

    Well, we all know what Freud would say about your banana obsession. “Some time a banana is NOT just a banana.”

    • Moriarty

      I think George Carlin had some thoughts on that as well.

  • LeFunk

    This banana looks shopped, I can tell from seeing quite a few bananas in my bananas, dawg,yo.

    Piltdown banana. That thing would weigh about two pounds if the image were real. Unless someone is using a midget hand model…

    @eagleapex, DJBudSonic & LeFunk:
    I can promise you it’s the real deal. A lasercutter works only in 2 dimensions, which means it projects the design straight onto the surface. The banana was laying on it’s side, so that’s why the pattern looks so “flat”. I’ll post a shot of the banana in another perspective tomorrow, though I can’t promise you the banana will still be in good shape (as the engraving makes it quickly starts to decompose).

      Why do I get the feeling that “tomorrow” actually means “never”?
