As I understand it, the TSA is just one of many security options that airport directors can choose. (For Conservatives, it may help to point out that the government-funded TSA is the only Socialist option: all others are Capitalist)

No airport director wants to be the one that DOESN'T choose the government-funded TSA and is then implicated in a terrorist attack, though. So all airports choose the TSA, and no other security company gets a look-in. Like the old IBM ad-line.

Plus, of course, the government-funded and equipped TSA is miles cheaper than the other companies because they are massively subsidised.

If there was a huge commercial reason for airports to pick a different (more expensive, less-well-equipped) security provider, then they would, of course.

But that's not gonna happen until something happens that strips the TSA of its government subsidies, and privatises it.

Anyone who isn't outraged the government can force bodily exposure without any good cause - that no one else could legally get away with... is an idiot or so left there is no hope for them.

Where are you 'it's my body' women now? Stand up for yourselves for crying out loud!

Security in your person doesn't mean anything anymore apparently.

ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Hell will freeze over before I agree to be molested by the government, the airport, uh, ANYONE.

Why should the force upon what you could legal shoot and kill them for elsewhere?

> almost no one will really wear one of these things...very few people have the stones or, as important, the desire to fuck themselves over.

What do you mean? The TSA said the gropings aren't punishment, so how would they possibly be fucking themselves over? Remember, the TSA is "only" doing this to make you (appear) safer, not to screw with people that don't want to be scanned.

>backups in the security area make as good a target, if not better, as an airplane. By creating blockages, you are making it that much better for a potential attack

Who cares? There are about a thousand unsecured soft targets that are way better than trying to blow up a plane. We are really safe from the previous war/attack though. Maybe france should build another maginot line too?

I think the solution is refuse to fly commercial. I assure you big drops in $$ will make the airlines take notice - and the only thing. I will NOT submit to sexual assault from them - period. Anyone who has had to submit to this needs to file suit. Especially CHILDREN. Try class action lawsuits and sue them for mental suffering and humiliation and sexual... everything. Make this the most miserable decision for them they've ever made. Don't be lazy - you are needed. It's not just for you. The power is within your hands to do this you flyers.

I'm going to be calling every airline and telling them, while not a frenquent flier, I'm about to become a never-with-them-flier.

You got that right. I cannot believe the assault people will just roll over and allow. Are they insane?

It is no different than a single woman so afraid to lose her job to support her kids so some scumbag of a boss let's her know 'how' to keep her job - wink, wink.

Now the 'boss' is the government! Scum. Sumbit to my sexual proposals and you can keep your way of life...

"Then again, I'm not really much of one for activism, protests and the like. I'll leave the rabble-rousing to people with a higher degree of righteous indignation than I'm capable of summoning"

Mkultra, then you deserve to be microwaved and fondled.

Do they have T-shits in kids sizes as well? One slogan could be, "It was more fun with Michael Jackson".

Your position- that Americans should happily embrace their government taking-and-storing naked pictures of them and their children- is utterly amazing.

What is the benefit of this degrading exchange? Don't tell me it's "enhanced security" during airtravel. They are doing the same damn thing to the PILOTS OF THE AIRPLANES- the very people who could, at any time, decide to crash the plane into a building. So that argument is disingenuous at best- idiotic at worst.

The bodyscanners are just another giant boondoggle- a gift from War State Lackey Politicians to their friends in War Industry Profiteering... If you don't believe me, then why not go to youtube and watch Michael Chertoff, the former head of the Department of Homeland Security, showing up on every damn news channel possible- trumpeting the wonders of these new machines (while NOT admitting that he is on the payroll of the company that makes and installs the machines!) Do you get it now?

The "War On Terror to Protect Us From The Freedom-Hating Enemy" is a big crock of crap. We've had more freedoms taken away from us by our own government than our theoretical enemies could ever take away by concocting low-budget schemes from caves in Afghanistan...

The solution to the 9/11 hijackings was to fortify cockpits in all planes. It would've cost under $20M to make all cockpits in commercial jets impenetrable.

Instead of that, we built up yet another massive government bureaucracy, "The Department of Homeland Security". We spent billions on machines to detect bomb-making residue in 2002-2003- making some OTHER War State cronies super wealthy... And then a few years later, we forgot about those and are now spending billions on naked-body scanners sold to us by the former head of the Department of Homeland Security. These scanners will actually result in increased incidents of cancer, to say nothing of the further degradation of an American population who has already suffered a great deal under the incompetence and corruption of the political class over the last decade...

In the end, the biggest terrorist risk to airplanes are ground-based stinger missiles being fired near a runway. No drug-sniffing machines, no x-rays, no genital fondling government lackeys are going to change that fact. Our government knows that- but they don't care. They're not really trying to protect us in the first place- they're trying to crush us.

So- if you don't care if the government has photos of you and your kids naked... Maybe you should care that it is robbing you blind to enrich corrupt plutocrats who are wiping their arses with the Constitution? And it's just going to get worse-and-worse until enough of us stand up and tell them to we're not taking it anymore.

I found myself in one of these absurd situations when I took my 12 year old grandaughter to the airport to return home to her parents on the second day of her first period. The metal buttons on her tight 501 jeans set off the wand, and they needed my permission to pat down her genitals. I refused, and was told I could not leave, and they would have to turn me over to the FBI if I continued to refuse to submit. I said, "So be it." They ended up retrieving her suitcase from the cargo hold of the plane, and allowing her to change into sweatpants. Whew. We don't fly anymore.

Meh, choosing not to fly doesn't do a lick of harm to the national economy. If you're not spending it on plane tickets you're spending it elsewhere.
Well, that's a really weak argument. Tourism does more than spread the wealth, it allows the population to communicate on a grassroots level. Staycationing fosters insularity. Insularity breeds division.

And it's not just domestic tourism and business travel, of course. I literally(and I know what that means and implies), know several dozen people overseas that have, over the last 8 years or so, restricted their travel to the US based on the perception of the indignities they would have to put up with visiting here. Europeans, Oceanians, and ex-pat Americans, alike.

Second paragraph: Airlines have always had a hard time. Before deregulation allowed airlines to drop unprofitable routes, air travel was expensive. That meant a smaller customer base. After, it's been cut-throat competition for market-share leading the industry to shave margins.

There isn't much of an airline lobby. They can't afford it. Their margins are razor thin. Politicians in DC that don't have government-paid air travel do depend upon the airlines to get them back 'home' to campaign for their jobs, so I guess they do recognize some self-interest in perpetuating the industry.

this has NOTHING to do with my self consciousness. it has EVERYTHING to do with my personal rights. One could go so far as to say they already consider you GUILTY of something by forcing a search ( x-ray scan or enhanced personal scan ). I am NOT guilty of ANYTHING i have absolutely no criminal record ( nor do i plan on obtaining one ) so what have i done that is soo wrong i need to be accosted?

The TSA will continue to terrorize Americans because nobody in Congress or in Obama's administration has the balls to tell them they have gone too far.

Personally, I think the TSA in its present form should be disbanded entirely. It's the illusion of security and is nothing more than harassment.

So, what are they doing with kids? I've got a (very expensive) trip that was paid for before this went into effect.

 * I don't want them to take nekkid pictures of my kids, and expose them to radiation of a dubious, medically unnecessary nature.
 * I don't want them to grope my kids.

I'm Seriously Not Interested in them terrorizing my kids. The last time they patted down one of my kids, he was about a year old, and he was bawling because of it, and that was pre-enhancement. There wasn't any serious groping involved.

I think a better protest is owning what they're trying to do, instead of making you feel embarrassed (though I know too many people are scared and would rather take what appears to be the "easy" way out). If making some grunt worker put their fingers all over my nut sac makes anyone feel safer I may as well pop a Viagra so that when I get to that point I stick out like a sore thumb. Imagine the guy touching me, don't you think he'll file some kind of sexual harassment suit with his work? It's not my fault I had a boner, it's the TSA's problem for thinking a closer inspection of my boner makes anyone safer ever, and they're actively making my boner their problem. So instead of being squeamish, I'd rather be pulled out for intense screening and have them grab my nuts in full view of the public. Want to know where all that tax money we never see spent on reasonable things went? Take a look at my sac and read between the lines. I'd still like to have kids one day, so the less radiation I'm exposed to the better, LAY IT ON ME BROTHA. It's just skin, whatever these dirty men do to me isn't anywhere near as bad as death.

Well, they tipped their hand and allowed it to be obvious that the new pat-down policy was social engineering to punish people for refusing the scanners.

Now that it's so blatantly obvious that the intent is humiliation to force compliance, people are actually wising up and trying to put these thugs in their place.

The problem is not just the naked pictures--which are going to be very traumatizing to anyone who has been a victim of sexual assault. The problem is also that the radiation level is 20 times higher than they claim it is. Don't believe me? Google "Airport scanners Columbia University" and read the PDF.

Hilarious shirts. I read more about the HR impact for employees of this TSA groping policy here
http://www.raisingstinker.com/197/the-tsa-will-not-grope-my-child/
The TSA needs to listen to the public discontent about this policy.

Another is L-3 Communications, formerly known as Titan, a defense contractor. Interestingly enough, this same company is currently trying to establish immunity against lawsuits for allegedly torturing people at Abu Ghraib.

No one has convinced me that I should care if anyone has a picture of me, or anyone else, pseudo-naked.
If you're that self-conscious about your body image, perhaps you should consider therapy.
There seems to be plenty of issues that deserve outrage and protest, this scanner technology is not one of them.

I recently had my first let-us-punish-you-for-not-submitting-to-a-body-scan experience. I waited for 10 minutes while the two women I was standing with looked for a THIRD woman to accompany them, and was patted down fairly normally - at least over the back. Despite the fact that I was female, and they were female, they were terribly reluctant to believe that the non-fleshy bits around my chest were in fact part of the underwire of my bra. They poked and prodded and finally took me into a private room, where I took my sweater off (I had a light cotton shirt underneath, fortunately) and they poked and prodded some more. Finally they brought in a supervisor who I was able to convince that I was not exotic enough to be hiding weaponry in my undergarments. I understand the need for security, but when it takes three women to recognise what a bra feels like under a single layer of clothing, I worry about the level of training they actually get for these pat-down procedures...

Funny t-shirt, but I'm pretty sure I would never actually wear one within 5 miles of an airport.

It isn't that I'm a coward, but I have better things to do with my life than being forced to travel overseas by cruise ship for the rest of my life because I annoyed random TSA official #2782 into putting me on the no-fly list.

Then again, I'm not really much of one for activism, protests and the like. I'll leave the rabble-rousing to people with a higher degree of righteous indignation than I'm capable of summoning.

no one gets groped or scanned before boarding a bus or train. ergo, it's not terrorism if a train/bus/trolley/subway should be blown up? oh right, because 9/11 only involved planes. so to make a show of force, we only scan air travelers. i think i follow the logic? ... no... this is not logic. cannot endorse.

i lol in the sad way that the manufacturer of the scanners is called Rapiscan. Say it with me: rape-y-scan!! Everybody!

That's just one more way to belittle people who aren't like you. Maybe someone who's just had a mastectomy needs to get comfortable with their new shape, but they shouldn't be forced to do so on the spot by the airports. Seriously.
