Hopefully this news story ends up getting the restaurant more business; enough to offset whatever losses they took.

Unless they're full to capacity every night anyway.

Maybe you should pay them more...

All we've eaten for the last four bleeding weeks is lupin soup, roast lupin, steamed lupin, braised lupin in lupin sauce, lupin in the basket with sauted lupins, lupin meringue pie, lupin. sorbet... we sit on lupins, we sleep in lupins, we feed the cat on lupins, we burn lupins, we even wear the bloody things!

That looks an awful lot like Time Restaurant critic Giles Coren. So I suppose the paywall is finally having a real world impact on Times expense accounts.

(it's not him, just for the record. Unless it is, in which case, I KNEW it!)

It's my experience that the only waitstaff at places with 1,000 dollar dinner tabs that are hurting for cash are those with outrageous drug habits. It's not the same thing as dashing from the $4.99 tab at Denny's where the waitstaff are paid $2.65/hour (without socialized healthcare) and have to pool their tips.

Outrage at these two is simply misplaced.

HAhaha I love a good sneak off. A friend of mine survived a summer more or less by skipping out of fancy restuarants. She would always tell the cashier at McDonalds that they miscounted if they did that but any fancy restuarant was fair game to her.

Um... could somebody explain to me how this would be "stealing from the rich"?

Rich people may dine at fancy restaurants, but a dine & dash is not stealing from them, it's stealing from the ones who run the restaurant, who may or may not be rich. Why would it be worse not paying at an ordinary diner compared to not paying at a fancy restaurant... the owner may be the same person. I think there is some kind of notion of stealing from "us" vs. stealing from "them", but the real target here isn't "us" and "them" that _eat_ there.

If Jigen was there, somebody might have got shot. . .^^

But this idea that 'hey, stealing from the rich is cool'. . .just remember: there are -Billions- of hungry striving people around the world that would kill to have what you computer owning leisure having restaurant going first-worlders do.

Should they?

('oh no don't steal from me! I'm nice and good and stuff: just steal from the really rich!')

But that's not how it works.

? I harbor no outrage to these two. I think there's an irony to the boss's statement. Why should the waitstaff be stiffed because of these two diners as opposed to the owners or bosses? Should a store that gets robbed take the loss out of an employee's paycheck? That's my point. See what I mean?

Personally, I'm one of those annoying working class lefties who finds such extravagant conspicuous consumption kind of distasteful so I don't really have too much sympathy for the restaurant.

Of course the anime character is based on the literary character, and I think calling the anime character a "monkeyman" is a bit much...

...and I don't think you do something like this because you were inspired by an anime character (as good as Castle of Cagliostro may be). Not sure why you'd think that.

Arsène Lupin, precisely. (Yes, diacritics really count in French :)

If they chose that name as an announcement to L'Autre Pied (the Other Foot, really? that's the name of your restaurant?), then it's pretty neat.

Well played, well played indeed.

£165 for a three-course meal in a fancy London restaurant (sans wine) doesn't sound so steep. I wonder what they ate?

Really? 265 American dollars for dinner for two (not counting the alcohol) seems reasonably steep.

I thought "Lupin" ("lupine"), lately overheard in Mayfair, was a Warren Zevon reference.

The difference is that waiters still get a large proportion of their income in tips, whereas store employees don't. That's the money the waiters are losing: the tip, not their paychecks. Should the manager give the waiters the tip that that table might have left, had they paid the bill and left a tip?

The problem is of course that maybe waiters shouldn't have to rely so much on tips. In a place like the states where the average tip is somewhere around 15% (many people leave 20%, some leave none), if everyone stopped leaving tips the waiters would be hurting. This isn't the case in many places in Europe, where the waiters are well-paid and the tips are no more than a couple dollars.

Then again, maybe that's why I often get pretty bad service in Italy. No one cares about the tips.
