why can’t people like Dr. Iwasa be recognized more famously for their work? Most people are so far disconnected from whats good or important now that people like Dr. Iwasa are shadowed by moviestars and celeb’s who have accomplished what? noooooooothing.

Thanks brillow, for linking to one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. That’s a process I’ve tried to visualize in my mind many times and always thought it must look pretty damn spectacular but the actual animation of it looks about 1,000,000 times more spectacular than it ever did in my head.

They’ve talked about that. Much is left out to highlight certain aspects. Our models are always simplifications.

Also, they need to add some jitter to this activity, all these molecules display brownian motion, not smooth, purposeful, swooping.

I completely agree with the glowing assessment of Dr Iwasa’s work, but if you check the credits at the end of the mitochondria clip at the top of the page, you’ll see that this is not an example of it. :)

Interesting work. I wonder what the stuff is that all this floats in? What is being erased to make this into the surrealist sea/space scape we can interpret?

My only real contention is the soundtrack, though. Reminds me of when these musicians made tree music out of some unique signal produced by various trees on the West Coast. Of course they chose the cheesiest new age dross. In my world trees sing death metal and molecular worlds unfold to the sounds of Benny Hill:

You can see some good animations on the homepage of Prof. Ada Yonath, who received the Chemistry Nobel prize in 2009 for her work in discovering the structure of the ribosome.

Check out http://www.wehi.edu.au/education/wehitv/ for some Emmy award winning video clips about molecular biology. Similar videos but also astonishing and breath taking. In particular the first one called body code.

Note: these are only estimations of in vivo processes. The artist still has a lot of freedom generating those pictures. Most processes are still no understood fully and can only be guessed to some degree.
