Native Sandy Eggan here, that was from one of the "Homegrown" albums put out by KGB, yes? I still have all of them. Nice to see a little bit of my town on Boing Boing - even if it is blurred out.

Saw the same thing happen to ol' Saint Nick here (you might have to zoom in): http://bit.ly/feZT4f

Even though his face is obscured, I can still tell it's him.

My family has an auto repair shop with a muffler man out front. He was also obscured, although only his eyes were blurred out. His head is made of a very not-human-shaped 12" glass pack.

Fourth generation SD native here (though now I'm an expat dwelling in far-flung exotic Pasadena).

A genuine pleasure to find someone who knows the Homegrowns! My collection has dwindled down to just two copies of Homegrown III, but I'm the only person I know to have Rose and the Arrangement in his iTunes library.

(singing)
"Well you go to La Jolla,
San Diego,
You get onnn Harbor Driiiive.
Down to the end,
Around the bend,
Puts! you! on! High! way! Five!

You're back in
Chula Vista, Chula Vista.
Chula Vista, Chula Vista.
Chula Vista, Chula Vista."
(dunk. dooiinnk! dunk. dooiinnk!)

The marina near this restaurant is where Craig Venter's boat Sorcerer II docks when it is in San Diego. And the Mai Tais at Bali Hai are heavy on the rum and light on the juice.

I noticed random Kanji blurred out on street signs and shop names in GSV Tokyo. The same characters were not blurred on up-the-street and down-the-street pics of the same or similar signs, and there was no blurring of faces in any of the cosmetic ads or political posters that plaster walls and fences. So, the algorithm is cautious enough to blur out complex letters that have the same basic arrangement as a human face might, but not smart enough to blur out actual human faces that are too large in proportion to their surroundings. The latter may be intentional; faces in ads have no right to privacy, I suppose.

I love that auto-blur. They blur the phone numbers off shopping bags (were they thinking it was a number plate?), yet fail to blur the quirky old dude from my neighborhood holding it.

One of the lamps in front of my house is apparently lifelike enough to be auto-blurred. I think it's actually a combination of features, including some well beyond the lamp itself, that must be face-like.

I wonder if it's the same face recognition algorithm they use in Picasa. It's interesting to see the 'faces' it pulls out of years of vacation photos. Most are genuinely faces, albeit sometimes on statues or figureheads. On its first pass through, it must have found about a thousand random Chinese pedestrians from a few shots of downtown Shenzhen - which defeats some of the convenience of automatic face recognition.
