It's cool from an artistic point of view, but I think I'd like it better if the gears looked like they might possibly do something instead of wandering off into empty space.

"The push of a button" might be the most misunderstood and improperly used phrase around today. This stuff had to be designed...then it had to be programmed. Once the machine cut it out, there appears to be massive amounts of glue work to put it together and sculpting and hand painting put on top of it. Oh yeah, looks like some serious welding for the frames...because the stuff from the machine has to be mounted on something. Countless hours of dreaming, hard work and fun all boiled down to "the push of a button". On the one hand, I bet he is happy to see the work being appreciated- but I also bet he doesn't love that phrase being used about it. "Automagical" my butt.

Ha ha! I'm the one who chose 'push of a button' to describe this great demonstration of what can be done with CNC. And Anon, you are exactly right; 'the push of a button' doesn't convey the process, but really, when compared to the old-fashioned alternative, it isn't entirely inaccurate.

The dreaming, the planning, the finish work and the installation are huge undertakings, and always have been. But the fabrication part of the process has been whittled down immensely - nearly to push-button simplicity.

I worked at MultiCam back in 2002-2004, and saw some incredible things there. One night, after work, I quickly drew up plans for a knockoff Noguchi coffee table in Illustrator, exported the file, then got help translating it to a readable jobfile. I went into the demonstration workshop, loaded up a couple of sheets of laminated particle board, and ran the job, cutting the tabletop and interlocking base pieces in a matter of minutes. I loaded the pieces into the trunk of my car, and before dinner, had slotted them together in my living room. Presto - from brain to reality between my workday and bedtime.

I'm just sayin.

Maybe in a few years we'll move on to tech-punk or something, and can start gluing resistors and ICs to our lamps instead of gears.

Proud to see our local talent on Boing Boing.

I can see the shop of Dan Sawatzky's studio (http://www.imaginationcorporation.ca/) out my front window in Yarrow, British Columbia.

Great work is always coming out of there and making the world a more interesting place.

Ever since I had the trauma of having a terrible, obese TA in a CS class where she kept inserting "automagical" in every other sentences, I cannot dissociate that word from all the evils in this world. :(
