A reader writes, "Last week, my wife and I were going through old boxes in her parents house. We came across some crafty felt Christmas stockings that my mother in law made back in the late 1960s, early 1970s. We even found the McCall's pattern she used to make them. In addition to the Christmas stockings, we found doorknob covers, a few holiday pins, even a mouse made from half a walnut shell and a Santa made from a beer can pull tab! We even found the original MaCall's pattern." Vintage stockings

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

I had them, too. 1976. They were an integral element of my Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver look.

Fun! I collect vintage Christmas stuff and love seeing the handmade things. I own a book from ’66 (I think) that’s all about making Christmas from trash. It includes a sleigh made out of the breast bone of a turkey: http://www.flickr.com/photos/akbuthod/3078736592/

Me too! Me too! They were the coolest shoes I ever had. Mine were suede with wooden heels, and I wore them with my little hot pants outfit in high school. Come to think of it, maybe that’s how I got my bad reputation.

Famolare. The original wavy platform shoe.

That is one fabulous stocking. And the cankles leave ample room to pass the orange through to the toe.

Can’t say I miss the color palette of the era, however.

I had shoes like those! It was late in the 70s though. I was very young. They had six inch platforms. I wish I still had them.

Before it was politically incorrect to do so, and the teachers all ran to the staff room to smoke at break time, we learned to make tree ornaments using the silvered paper from cigarette packs. My mom still smoked then, so I could get some from her. We used them to cover the caps of milk bottles.

there are plenty of things laying around in old boxes. There are good chances to wear out things even the second hand way.
