For you early risers, I'll be discussing the tenth anniversary of Wikipedia with John Hockenberry on The Takeaway at 7:20 am Eastern time. Check your local listings or the live stream. Here's the show archive. The producers made a fun listener quiz for the occasion. Happy anniversary, Wikipedia!

Andrea, what is your opinion on the declining numbers of active administrators? Down 12% in 2010, 8% in 2009 and 6% in 2008. The time to archive WP:ANI was halved this year.

  • js7a

…time to archive sections on WP:ANI was halved last year/this past year/in 2010, I mean. Sorry.

  • Michael Smith

A decline in wikipedia administration can only be a good thing from where I stand. Less of an ivory tower. More crowd sourcing.

    • Andrea James

@Michael: I agree completely. I have been critical of the bureaucratic calcification setting in. The project needs to stay non-hierarchical and dynamic. Administrators have a thankless job, and fewer people have an interest in going through the bullshit election process. Enough with the pettifogging wikilawyers obsessing over byzantine rules. A little anarchy is a good thing in my book!
