I remember a guy in my high school gave himself such an intense hickey on his arm that it became a medical issue.

Not that it wasn't a "medical" issue before. In the words of TMZ, I'm just sayin'.

The clot moving to the heart would be called a heart attack. It would not have caused paralysis or any other stroke-like symptoms. A stroke is usually the result of a clot moving into, and restricting blood-flow in, the brain.

I presume this was an error in the original article, and not perpetrated by the good folk at Boing Boing.

The article incorrectly indicated that the clot travelled to the heart. It travelled straight from the location in the carotid where it formed to her brain. An entirely likely final resting place is somewhere along the ipsilateral MCA, with paralysis or hemiparesis resulting on the opposite side.

"it is possible to block a carotid artery, supplying the brain, with a thrombosis as well. this can lead to (one form) of stroke. but usually the brain will be getting enough blood from the counter lateral artery due to a nice little safety called the circle of Willis."

This is not accurate. Emboli to the brain, if of sufficient size to cause occlusion of any of the main arteries in the Circle of Willis, cause devastating neurological injury unless they are removed. Even then, in the period immediately following recannalization, there is a risk of reperfusion injury and conversion from ischemic stroke to hemorrhagic, often with fatal result. And depending on the length of time the artery was occluded, function may or may not be regained and swelling of tissue secondary to cell injury and death can result in herniation.

This woman was fortunate: most likely her thrombus was small and settled in one of the MCA branches instead of the main MCA itself.

the post said artery.
to give a little bit of clarification here.

circulatory system:
body -> veins -> right heart -> lung -> left heart -> arteries -> body

blood vessels (arteries and veins) can be blocked by something called a thromb(us)/thrombosis along with other things.
it is locally clotted blood. it formed at the place, did not travel there.
so in most heart attacks a fatty or calcified patch in the wall of a coronary artery will break open, causing tiny blood particles to form a clot, therefore blocking the artery, causing a heart attack.

it is possible to block a carotid artery, supplying the brain, with a thrombosis as well. this can lead to (one form) of stroke. but usually the brain will be getting enough blood from the counter lateral artery due to a nice little safety called the circle of Willis.

One problem arises, when thrombs start traveling. they then become (thromb)emboli. all sorts of stuff can travel in the blood stream as emboli. for example air bubbles, bullets, your own fetus´ hair and other things.
thrombemboli are the most common source for lung embolism when thrombosis of the deep veins in your legs start traveling and end up (see circulation) in the lungs.
for such an embolus to travel to your brain you would need an open "foramen ovale", a hole between the right and left atrium through which the embolus can travel in a shortcut, not going through the lungs (this is the function of the open hole in a fetus, as lungs are not needed for oxygen).
or, the thromb could have formed after the lungs. in the left heart for example, preferably in a dog ear shaped pouch in the atrium. or in an area of former infarction where muscle tissue is replaced by scar tissue that does not move. not moving is a major factor in the formation of clots. others are change in the blood and its ingreedients itself or turbulence in blood flow (all together dubbed the trias of Virchow, a fellow german pathologist and politician).
also, clots could form in the arteries of the neck or even further up to cause strokes.
btw. stroke is not synonimous with brain embolism.

for further reading - wikipedia.

PS: it is surely rare to read about this as caused by hickey. i just hope the woman was not strangled and the doctor misinterpreted the bruises on the neck for a hickey.....
force to the neck is well described as a source for thrombosis and stroke. for example in survived hanging, whiplash trauma and direct trauma like baseball hits, flying elbows and such.

<blockquote>I'm kind of puzzled, what is wrong with having hot sex in your 40s?</blockquote>

A hickey isn't a symbol of hot sex; it's a symbol of your date marking his/her territory.

When I was about 16, my girlfriend gave me a big, dark-purple hickey on my neck. When my stepfather saw it, he said disapprovingly that I should tell her not to do that, because it could cause blood clots that might lead to other health issues. All this time, I'd assumed he was just making it up.

True confession time. When I was alone for the first time with my then-girlfriend, all we did was kiss for a LONG time. Neither of us had ever done that before. And for some reason I thought sucking on her lower lip was a key part of what I was supposed to be doing. So I sucked long and hard (er, sorry). And her lower lip blew up to three times its normal size and was an incredible shade pf purple/blue. The embarassment factor from peers and parents was unreal. Somehow we went on to date for several years, getting other parts of human sexuality down pat amazingly without ever having a child...

I always thought of a hickey as kind of a love-badge of honor. You could've wasted an evening watching <i>American Idol</i> or <i>Big Brother 14</i>, but instead you were getting down in the trenches making something happen. Carpe diem.

I mean it would one thing if you were just sitting around and decided your bf/gf needed a giant ugly welt on their neck, but if it just happened, or if you were so caught up in things that you didn't even know it was happening ... well, good on ya, mate.

And if somebody has to wear a high collar to hide things: shared intimate secret.

I always thought of a hickey as kind of a love-badge of honor. You could’ve wasted an evening watching American Idol or Big Brother 14, but instead you were getting down in the trenches making something happen. Carpe diem.

I mean it would one thing if you were just sitting around and decided your bf/gf needed a giant ugly welt on their neck, but if it just happened, or if you were so caught up in things that you didn’t even know it was happening … well, good on ya, mate.

And if somebody has to wear a high collar to hide things: shared intimate secret.

Yes it may surprise some that even in New Zealand there exists a class of what we like to call "special" people, and a similar ratio of potential Darwin Award recipients to that found in the rest of the world!

"Wu said the clot dislodged and traveled to the woman's heart, where it caused a minor stroke that led to the loss of movement."

Okay. I'm confused. I always thought a stroke was something that occurred in the brain, not the heart. Am I reading this wrong?

Friday night, a bar somewhere in Ohio, Fox news on TV, karaoke as a soundtrack.
Fox News shows the same wikipedia pic as in the above article.

Drinker A: Why is Fox news reporting on sucker bites?
Drinker B: Whaaa??? (turns around. TV now showing a stern looking Jesus. Zoom in on Jesus' eyes.)
Drinker A: Maybe Fox says Jesus says no sucker bites?

It wasn't until the next morning, perusing other news sources, that we find out it really was a news story about a sucker bite! Drinker A wasn't drunk!
It wasn't until later Saturday afternoon that we find out Jesus was featured in an ad turned down for Superbowl airing, and it wasn't really Fox News commenting on sucker bites.

That woman is not 44 years old. They've most likely given a mis-leading age to hide the identity of the girl. Look at her skin complexion, and general health of air. Also, the piercing. She looks to be about mid-twenties.
