You didn’t even mention that awesome cover by the amazing William Stout!

  • bwcbwc

Wow, a flashback! One of my favorite LPs I picked up during the buying spree when I had my first job was “The Beat”.

PaulCollinsbeat.com also has free mp3s of live versions of his early work @ http://www.paulcollinsbeat.com/homepage.html Other than that, the site is pretty out of date, touting an album to be released in 2008.

    • David

No, you’re wrong. That’s a fan site. The actual official Paul Collins Beat website is http://www.thepaulcollinsbeat.com

The Paul Collins Beat has a full band electric live concert CD (as mp3s) and a pro DVD video from another live concert and some music videos that aired on MTV. All of that stuff is free for anyone to download at no charge or signup.

King of Power Pop! That’s a pretty tall claim – I nominate Pete Shelly. There are a lot of contenders for that crown.

  • Angryjim

I wonder if he got approval from Power Pop Pop-Pop. If not he better watch out that he doesn’t get popped. (If you have no idea what Im talking about you gotta check out The Best Show on WFMU.)

Also, there was a compilation of the Nerves stuff (whom Paul was a member of) issued a couple of years ago. If you’re into that power-pop sorta thing, it is highly recommended.

Yes, The Nerves One Way Ticket is a compilation of all The Nerves’ studio recordings and some prime live cuts as well. The same record label released a lost album by The Breakaways, the post-Nerves, pre-Beat album featuring Paul Collins and Peter Case after they disbanded The Nerves with Jack Lee. As you will notice, The Breakaways was a stepping stone for Collins’ first album with The Beat and they actually recorded songs that would later become popular from the first album “The Beat.”

The name of the record label is Alive Naturalsound and they have a wide range of great artists, including The Black Keys and T Model Ford.

Oh WHEN are people going to use a CONSISTENT file naming convention for MP3s?

That’s what ID3 tags are for.

Note that he didn’t claim to be King of Power Pop until after Doug Fieger died.

    • David

Wrong. This album “King Of Powerpop” was recorded in 2009, many months before Doug Fieger of The Knack or Alex Chilton of Big Star passed away. The cover The Paul Collins Beat do on here this album of The Box Tops’ “The Letter” sounds somewhat similar to Chilton’s voice, but was intended to be more of a 60s rock/garage tribute than powerpop.

Ironically, I had the good fortune of having lunch with Doug Fieger a few years back. When I mentioned The Paul Collins Beat, he said that their first album was one of his all-time favorites from that period and that he saw them perform live. Doug was very humble and never once did it seem like I was talking to a rockstar. It felt like I was talking to another fan of music, a super-fan at that.

I’m sure this message is going to get killed as spam but I’ll give it a shot anyway. Another way to find legal, free MP3s is to go to Amazon, choose the category of MP3 Downloads and sort by price from lowest to highest. Alternately you can use the link below.
