Saddleback leather iPad case

Saddleback, which makes unbelievably sturdy leather bags, made an iPad cover and I got one. It's unbelievably sturdy. Made from cows genetically spliced with Keith Richards to create leather a centimeter thick, it offers an unusual degree of natural-fabric protection at the cost of your iPad occupying a much larger space in the gadget bag … and becoming as heavy as a hardback book.

The case is a folio-style one (like Apple's own) with the iPad held on the inner, opposite side. It comes in light brown, brown, dark brown and very dark brown. Cleverly sized straps hold well without clasps, and can even be tucked into their loops inside-out, so that the cover doesn't flap about when the case is open. At $104, it's more expensive than a basic AYL Leather Case, but compares well to designer leather options like the $200 Orbino, $190 Temple or Julie Boyles' handcrafted ones.

Pros:
• Unbelievably sturdy.
• If you want to take your iPad tomb raiding, this is the one.
• You could survive a week in the desert by eating it.

Cons:
• Heavy and very thick.
• No hole for the home button means you have to press it through the leather or cut your own.
• Little use against liquids or dust.
