Manually synchronizing the new Disney park light-shows, bridging 2500 miles with YouTube

Ricky from Inside the Magic sez, "After independently covering the world premieres of Disney's new high-tech projection shows at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, I've synchronized videos of both shows side-by-side. They feature the same soundtrack and similar visuals, but one is projected on Cinderella Castle, the other on the "it's a small world" facade. The result is a simultaneous view that's impossible to get in real life, but entirely enjoyable. 1080p HD full screen for the best experience."

  1. Coolest thing I’ve seen from Disney in a while. A lot of real thought and engineering went into that.

But I thought the point of the thing was to let guests recognize themselves: if the projections are the same, these must just be stock photos, and everyone in the audience just assumes they’re other people in the crowd.

  2. The photos are ones taken by Photopass photographers throughout the day in the park. The video portions have been sent in by guests so those are the same each night.

  3. The 3D-effect of most projections looks better on the castle, but the animation seems to be originally designed for the It’s a Small World facade.

It would be interesting to learn about the challenges behind this dual-design…

  4. I wonder whether this was originally developed for Disneyland. The projections seem to work better on Small World’s facade. Of course, it could be that it was always planned for both parks, and the realization just turned out better in Disneyland.

  5. Nothing compared to Prague celebrating their clocks 600th anniversary…..Makes Disney look like its still in diapers.
