ruby-process-51-400x599.jpgIncredible porcelain doll maker Marina Bychkova was profiled in the second issue of Craft magazine (which my wife Carla edited).

Here's one of Marina's recent creations, Captain Nemo's Daughter. It is limited to 10 pieces, but I'm not sure if any are available. There are more pictures at her website. Her blog is excellent, too -- here she describes her painting process.

It’s interesting that the immediate response to these (and the works of Audrey Kawasaki) isn’t “extremely creepy ephebophilia”.

Looks like she blew her bankroll on a real cool helmet and forgot that real aquanauts need at the very least some sturdy trousers, too. Chicks. What are you gonna do with em?

Captain Nemo in love was the fiercest,
Tore his rubber dolls all into pieces.
When he ran out of glue,
He said: “Well, I’ll have to
Use my old diving suit as a mistress”.

For those wondering what the hell I’m talking about, it’s ball jointed dolls.

    Originated with Hans Bellmer

also championed by Simon Yotsuya (NSFW)

Fascinated with idea of having total power over the doll as a token for human relations between controlling and controlled, ideas implicit in Otaku fetishims like this doll.

I have been following Marina’s blog/art ever since boing Boing featured her in 2008. I was floored by her versatility and talent as an artist, considering that she makes every doll from scratch (molding, casting, painting, sewing, beading, etc…) and that she is a formally trained metalsmith.

She says that artist Sulamith Wülfing’s illustrations are a huge inspiration for her ethereal, slender girls…

My only problem is that back in 2008, a simple, nude doll was about $600… They are now around $1200 and there is a waiting list for orders… Despite the fact that I’m getting further and further away from ever being able to own one of her pieces, I think that her success is completely warranted.

Mr. Bellmer, please pick up the white courtesy phone, Hans Bellmer, please pick up the white courtesy phone.

    You just exploded Cory.

Maybe she’s just fitting the helmet. She must have a very long neck for that helmet to be comfortable though. And she sure has the strangest knees I have ever seen.

  • Vnend

I thought that Nemo was Indian. If so, she looks a little pale.

    Otherwise, neat.

  • ericblair

I thought it was a Big Sister from Bioshock 2. The fanservice version, of course.

  • kmoser

She seems to be only half anatomically correct. What’s up with that?
