Locksmith's swirling mural of discarded keys

The facade of NYC's Greenwich Locksmith is an elaborate, beautiful mural made of thousands and thousands of discarded keys and locks. ScountingNY writes, "The key facade was designed and installed entirely by owner Phil Mortillaro back in October, and I can't tell you how beautiful it is up close. It almost feels like the locksmith version of a Pollock painting - tens of thousands of keys seemingly strewn about haphazardly, yet in the mess, patterns emerge."

    1. Biggest problem? Patterns take time and Pollock is famous. Sounds like like sneeze technique worked out well!

  1. I like the fact the owner did this after the fact he got an architect to come up with a redesign in the facade in some very quaint, but safer way that barely has connection to the neighborhoods past. This is a perfect example of the ersatz NYC architecture I have always known and loved. Awesome!

  2. That small detail pic looks more like ‘Starry Night’ than anything else. Strangely I’ve seen key sculptures at a lot of keymakers and locksmiths. They probably get bored on off hours.. This is the neatest so far, though.

And stop ragging on Pollock. He did his stuff for a reason and it is what it is. Your comments on abstract expressionism do not change its place in history, and no one will ever commit his ‘crimes against art’ again. Not to mention, Pollock’s pieces are not meant to be looked at on a computer screen or art book.. It’s important to walk around the painting itself.
