My printer-before-last was an HP. Worked great, lasted for years. When it finally died, I got another HP. Worst piece of crap ever. It wouldn't function with its own software. Straight to the trash.

There was an interesting surprise at HP's press conference, too: WebOS will also be made available for PCs.

.. for as long as it takes for microsoft to point out that they will stop letting HP have Windows unless it goes away.

Heh, WebOS... without spelling the O and S as single letters, it reads "webos" a phonetically equivalent of the spanish word "huevos" (eggs) which by the way, in México is a slang for... well... testicles.

Me and my co workers laughed so hard...

I thought that smallest phone was a gag at first. But now I'm really excited about it, looks real nice to me. I haven't seen much in the way of actual form factor innovation in the smart phone world and this is a nice change of pace, and an interesting proof of concept if it goes over well in the market.

I really hope they do this, and that it works. If WebOS actually does manage to live up to the hype, if their tablet is decent, and if it ports to the desktop, we'll have a whole new, and interesting, software field out there, ideally one that puts more emphasis on user experience than on nerds' personal fetishes.

What I mean by that is if WebOS has the same kind of presentation as iOS/OSX, things might get very interesting indeed. Imagine being able to spend an entire week without having to use a stylus or a command line. Imagine using desktop software that just gets the hell out of your way and lets you work. Now imagine having all of that on a non-Apple device.

I'm writing this, BTW, on a 27" iMac, with my phone and pad sitting right beside it. I like Apple, but I also like worthy competition.

It's going to be a revolution of the whole world of gamers, it's going to be big I could not wait to see what games stretch for this platform.
Here's a post I wrote where I review some possible scenarios regarding this platform.

I am interested in the idea of having WebOS on three types of devices. HP could offer a UI with absolutely seamless integration between devices on all scales. Imagine being able to drag an unsaved document directly from your PC desktop to a phone or tablet and continue working on it later with its state perfectly replicated on a different device.

Touchpad doesn't include back camera, Xoom has one of 5.0 MP.

"Enters fray" and "out later this year" seem mutually exclusive. Particularly since no pricing information is available, it's not real.

Motorola Xoom display = 1280 x 800
Look at this Touchpad vs iPad vs Xoom vs Playbook specs comparison chart on Engadget:

Now iPad has some good challengers.

This is not coming out until summer, when, presumably, iPad 2 will already be available. So keep in mind, this is not competing with the iPad, but with the unknown iPad 2.

Also, we don't know it's price.

So, really, we won't know the shape of the "pad" market for summer 2011, until summer 2011.

Heheh, good. Mac fans aren't happy unless they can complain about how some company stole Apples' ideas, and that pad looks very similar to the ipad. Maybe it's key differences will just be an independence from Itunes and support for multiple data carriers.

Dumb. They are essentially competing with last year's iPad, so yes these specs make it look better.

They would have been wise to wait a couple of months for confirmed specs on the iPad 2 and compete with THIS year's model.

Otherwise this is just another one of those "Hey we can make pad computers too!" announcements that make some of these companies appear less relevant.

To this day I still can't comprehend why HP abandonned the 2005 TC-1100 tablet design. If they would have kept it evolving HP would have beaten the Ipad like 3 years before its birth. Last week one of my two HP average laptop died, and I wont ressucitate it. I have one last HP laptop left and everyday I refrain from throwing it through the window. HP has stop innovating years ago, now theyre just followers, and in a mediocre way too. Today being a huge company doesnt guarantee survival, you need to be ahead of the pack. This model is a shameful example of how HP is barely following new techs, and poorly competing...

Amazes me that i'm wondering... humm does this have a headphone jack? does it do bluetooth 3?

Boooh.

Digital regression... Nothing more...
