Rina from the wonderful, free SF in SF reading series writes,

SF in SF is delighted to welcome filmmaker and director, Sandy Collora, here from Los Angeles for a special evening of discussion/Q & A, autographing, and a screening of both BATMAN: DEAD END* and HUNTER PREY. This is a one-of-a-kind event - we promise you won't be disappointed! Come ask the director about filmmaking, good old-fashioned thrilling science fiction, Comic-Con, and what's it like to be an auteur!

Both films knocked 'em dead at Comic-Con!! Film director and comic book writer Kevin Smith called BATMAN: DEAD END "possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made", and comic book artist Alex Ross praised it as "Batman the way I've always wanted to see him." DVDtalk.com points out that "At the very least, "Hunter Prey" will entertain you, but it will also remind you beyond the big budget Hollywood excess, there are still those willing to break their backs to get their vision on the big (or small) screen." AND for you Gen-Xers out there, actress Erin Gray gives a classy performance as the voice of the computer! And did we mention the free popcorn???

A Movie Guest (Thanks, Rina!)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Found “Batman: Dead End” on YouTube. Interesting.

What I noticed that was weird was that the Joker was played by Andrew Koenig (Walter’s son) who killed himself about this time last year.

Shades of Heath Ledger offing himself post-Joker…? Is the role now cursed? :/

Best Joker ever. Props to Ledger’s performance, but Boner flat out nailed it. That’s the mental image of Joker that I had from reading Batman comics and graphic novels as a kid.

Batman:Dead End is fantastic, at least to the point where it gets all fanboyishly indulgent.

And Kevin Smith? I agree with you…I just wish that when you had the chance to write Batman comics, you hadn’t done…well, what you did. SERIOUSLY.

I’ve looked at this headline 3 times and I still don’t get it. Did the price of verbs go up?

I just want to say that Batman: Dead End is one of my favorite fan films of all time.

They NAILED Batman. Why the HELL can’t Hollywood figure out sometimes less is more.

I liked the look of the Joker more than Nicholson, but less than Ledger. Not enough screen time to judge the acting well, but I thought he did a solid job.

Aliens – did they lease some props from FOX?

Predator – again – awesome costumes, though I imaging those are a little easier to fabricate. But it looks great.

Predator is one of my favorite characters of all time. I drew him constantly in High School and had a 4pt comic 1/2 way scripted at one point. When I get the coin, Dave Dorman is going to draw Predator vs Boba Fett – breaking the worlds record for the most awesome on one page.

Hunter:Prey was one of the best Sci-Fi movies I saw last year.
Really impressive considering I’ve heard they made the weapon props out of nerf guns. I’d love to know how much it cost to make overall.
