Really, Thinkgeek’s $150 Star Trek White Noise Sleep Machine does it all: projects a moving starfield on your ceiling, plays starship-like white noise loops while you drift off, presents a goofily plausible UI and form-factor straight out of the Roddenverse, and can even play the red alert klaxon as its alarm-tone.

This doesn’t surprise me at all. My husband has ruined at least 4 of them in our home laundry. And an mp3 player.
“We” laundered and dried one and it still worked.
Did that to my very first one, a 128 MB model. Not only did it survive (even after the plastic case fell about), I was able to use it up until about last year.
i’ve washed mine three different times.
still works.
Hey! Those are mine!
I’ve been giving “blitz talks” about such things. The CCCKC Hackerspace being my current venue for this presentation. It does get tuned for which audience and time frame I am in each time. The stunning part is when I place it as a question regarding my earlier in some evening’s “Data Loss Risk Reduction” talk.
A group of 10 or more Hackerspace folks and guests in the typical- not everyone’s into the presentation. It happens to the best presentations. That’s up to the moment when I ask the loaded question:
“More and more than a few of you folks are now using USB drives for your backups. Oh? The drive you left..At home? With, like-Portable Firefox set to remember logins amd passwords for your OTHER set of Facebook accounts on it? DUUUDE_ I hope you used encryption on the drive someone in your house is -already looking at as you did not use encryption? That’s the moment of no small fears for some. That simple question- do you always encrypt that flash media? I have seen some people sweat As they should. Even if the issues as trivial as leaking an upcoming birthday party or proposal etc. Or really bad stuff.
The questions now to ponder- how many of your OLD and already “out of your control” flash media devices have stuff on them that several tools can recover? Like those laundered drives? Flash media should be considered as “forever” or longer. Wear Levelling methods in almost all flash media causes an incredibly incriminating amount of data such as? Oh, the Chatroulette pics on someone’s company phone. The one they just turned in recently and reset first, thinking that Factory Reset deletes it all for good? Ask Oliver North applies. It’s astonishing how many people “know” this about flash media- and still have left unencrypted backups around. Or devices they’ve reassigned. `Flash media is something that unlike your clothes- holds dirt well.
