An enterprising fellow in Christchurch is auctioning off the 25-tonne boulder that destroyed his building as a "landscape feature" with proceeds going to the ChCh Earthquake Relief Fund. He calls the rock "Rocky."
He is in pristine condition (just a little bit of concrete dust). Suitable for garden feature, or as in our case a magnificent addition to your living area.

Rocky will enhance your "indoor outdoor" flow considerably, especially if you load him in through the garage roof like we did.

Sorry, but we are unable to deliver Rocky but would be happy for you to pick him up and roll him away (please mind our neighbours when you do) :-)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The questions to the seller on this auction are superb and prove that a sense of humour still exists after such a disaster!

  • JonS

    “Cantabrian”

  • Hirsty

    That boulder is beached az.

    • Seb

Yup, beached az bro. Gonna take more than a bucket or a hose eh?

      • Hirsty

        Too right mate.

News just out that no bodies were found in the Cathedral. Still a lot of digging to do. I think that guy should rebuild his house around Rocky.

  • aeon

For the record I didn’t submit “Christchurchian” (sic).

Rocky’s owner is the friend of a friend and he’s apparently been inundated with questions on the auction, the majority of which he’s managed to find a witty reply for. I take my hat off to him (and all long suffering Cantabrians who’ve managed to retain a sense of humour), it’s Kiwis like him that make my adopted home so great.

Christchurchian? I think the word you’re looking for is Cantabrian. :P

There is a house in Fountain City, Wisconsin, that had a large rock tumble down the bluff and embed itself in the building. It’s now a quirky tourist attraction, “The Rock in the House” – as distinct from The House on the Rock, elsewhere in the state.
