ToFuGuns spotted MAD Magazine great Sergio Aragonés on a Seattle street and the cartoonist was kind enough to smile for a photo that now resides in the Boing Boing Flickr Pool.

Sergio Aragonés. Downtown Seattle

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Sergio!! Bless us with a new book! Please!

    It’s been years!

  • Blazel

Truly one of the greatest moustaches on Earth. His cartoons are pretty great too.

  • taj1f

Aragonés = Awesome. This made my day.

  • gwailo_joe

Nice! Just don’t call him a mendicant. . .or you’ll be very very sorry.

  • north

    Groo the Wanderer = Awesome.

  • durfsmurf

It’s weird how a random picture of a cartoonist walking down the street can make me so happy.

Funny, he doesn’t LOOK like he’s been marginalized.

    • noah django

      best comment.

did the photographer already know it was Aragones, or did the mustache give it away? I’m so glad I grew up with Mad.

      • tofuguns

I spotted Aragones across the street and knew it was him immediately, I have seen him at several conventions over the years. That said, the moustache makes him fairly difficult to miss. This shot really does make me smile.

Oh, and thanks for all the nice comments everyone.

    :)

Capturing one of the rare moments Sergio was not actually drawing.

  • Boba Fett Diop

    Huzzah! Cheese dip for everyone!

I grew up enjoying Sergio, but I’m rather annoyed that he killed Marty Feldman.

  • 5-Track

    What pirates?

Had the pleasure of sitting beside Sergio at a comic convention once. He told me giving away sketches for free was ruining his business. He has a ton of stories, but what else could you expect from someone who’s been in the business for like ever.

  • Kleinzeit

That’s a nice photo to compare and contrast with this one, of the artist Alberto Giacometti crossing the road in the rain:

Sergio is one of the all-time greats! I met him with my Dad when I was around 12, (25+yrs ago) and we couldn’t find a copy of Groo #1 for him to sign, so he gave us his reference copy.

  • mellowknees

He is so awesome! My husband and I had the good fortune to be able to walk right up to him at Comic Con (no line on the first day!). We bought a couple of comics and not only did he sign them, but he did a bunch of awesome doodles on each of them – we didn’t even ask or anything. He just did it. It was so cool!

  • Nadreck

and looking exactly as you always knew he did. In addition to producing awesome stuff he is also the Patron Saint of aspiring cartoonists and has helped endless numbers of them into the field.

Cartoonist in the wild – sort of resembles this: http://www.boingboing.net/2011/03/09/new-smithsonian-data.html

  • spatchcock

He lives in my town, and I can confirm he’s as nice a guy as he appears.
