    TETSUO!

    KANEDAAAAAA!!!!!!

I’d give it ten minutes if I were you (give or take 12,000 years…)

  • teapot

Not by teapot via the submiterator at 8:01AM?
Ridiculously cute animation for explaining present Japan nuclear crisis to kids [with subtitles]

Because if you check it out, I think you’ll find my submiterator post even preceded the daily what which preceded Laughing Squid.

“This was posted on Thursday, March 17th, 2011 at 8:10 am”

    Oh well.

  • Supurcell

Finally it has been put into words that I understand (well, not the Japanese words).

  • Noodle

I’m surprised how accurate the metaphor is! Brilliant!

  • Mister44

Oh… Japan… you and your poo metaphors.

  • Anonymous

Johnny Lydon said it best: “Its easy to deceive a child”.

  • GammaBlog

Yes, hide from the poo under your desk, kids.

  • anansi133

I can’t remember anyone in the states having had the balls to try to explain 3 mile island to the kiddies. I think the closest we came to this was, “Pepsi Syndrome” on SNL.

  • karthikophobia

This is the reason I luv Japan.

The style reminds me of “Kogepan”, but the video is both sad and hopeful at the same time. Made me feel more for the situation than the news reports do, actually.

  • Stonewalker

“It literally pooped in the classroom… and it was diarrhea.. and it got everywhere!”

    In reference to “Chernobyl Boy”.

  • baph

I’m 29 years old and what is this?

  • isaacb2

How about an analogy that doesn’t equate “safe” with “holding your poop in”?

This is exactly the level of detail the nuclear industry is comfortable sharing with the public. And don’t worry! It won’t be as horrific as the deadliest accident on record! Yay!

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure if I’m supposed to laugh or cry.

  • wmbozarth

This reminds me of the film Life is Beautiful (1997) where the father tries to shield his son from the horrors of the Nazi concentration camp by giving whimsical explanations for it all. The sweetness just makes the reality all the more grim. Thanks for posting this, Rob.

  • razen cain

Ah, there’s the Japan I know and love. Everyone was so serious the last week, I was wondering where the crazy went.

And somehow I doubt this is for youngsters. I picture this thing being on the evening news.

  • Anonymous

I think we can all agree that if the reactors meltdown then they will be up to their necks in poo.

“This is exactly the level of detail the nuclear industry is comfortable sharing with the public. And don’t worry! It won’t be as horrific as the deadliest accident on record! Yay!”

Yeeeahhh .. NO … if you want more information you can visit

    http://www.nei.org/newsandevents/information-on-the-japanese-earthquake-and-reactors-in-that-region/

It’s not so much a matter of information being shared as it is of people looking for it (or the media actually sharing “relevant and correct” information with the public).

Also pay attention to the following:
“EVEN IF this incident takes a turn for the worst (pay very close attention to the earlier EVEN IF statement, they’re not saying that it has or it will), it will not be as terrible as the worst accident in history (i.e. we have made our plants better since then)”

Speaking for making plants better please be aware that these were roughly 40 year old plants. If any of the newer designs (e.g. Westinghouse’s AP1000) were to come under this situation they wouldn’t skip a beat.
