Actually, KING5 news in Seattle recently did a story on SeaTac Airport using this guy attached to an RC boat to chase the geese out of a pond close to the airport. Apparently, by the looks of the video they showed, it works wonders.

See: http://www.king5.com/home/Coyote-boat-to-scare-birds--Its-no-joke-and-makes-flying-safer-117701803.html

String. Geese are not the most agile of creatures. You can fence them out with string. Putting stakes around a pond then tying string about 1 foot off the ground between them turns one ideal feeding and nesting ground into two useless areas for geese.

Or just make a wall of coyotes.

Doesn't work; story same as Beth's. Our building management at work got one of these last year, plus two "geese in agony" for the pond. The coyote got ignored completely. Geese and ducks both literally swam circles around the "dying" goose decoys, making them navigational touchstones for the pond. Watching a duck resting one day inside the "injury" of a goose decoy one day was special.

Believe me, it works! And works well. As long as the figure gets moved around every week or so the geese will stay away. A brave goose might land and see that the figure does not move. In that case someone or some thing has to react to scare the goose.

There's a park around here with ponds that got overrun with geese. They tried everything and eventually got a dog that was trained to chase after them whenever they tried to land. That's all he does all day. Seems to have worked so far.

Geese are cool up in the sky but a cranky poo storm on the ground.

I don't know about geese, but deer definitely are fooled by this kind of thing. As a kid, one year we put some deer made of logs in the front yard for christmas, and the deer left the roses alone. Since they were working so well, my parents never got rid of them until they fell apart.
Since they are now gone, my parents put a large plastic statue of a buck in the front yard. At one point, they saw a buck staring at it, and later its head had fallen off because it was attacked. The point being that the theory is sound, even if it doesn't work on all creatures.

I too have a problem with geese.
I've learned with anything horticultural to ask the neighbors, ask at the local farmer's coop, and then check out the university agricultural extension service.
What I learned was that if you already have a problem with geese, the only remedy for that season is "active" -- real live humans or predator animals continuously harassing them. If the geese are already habituated to eating in a place, then they already feel comfortable there and are going to be very skeptical about any newly induced fake hazards to them.

On the other hand, when geese are out of season but beginning to migrate into your zone, the passive controls are highly effective -- fencing between the watercourse and your desirable lawn, predator silhouettes, etc.

Basically, if they are determined to feed on your lawn, it is hard to discourage them. But if they are making an initial choice between your lawn with the predator silhouette and the equally appealing lawn at the retirement home up the street, it becomes quite easy to sway their opinion.

So in one sense I find this thread very amusing. We have plenty of commentary and photo evidence that these don't work, and also plenty of commentary that they do. There also exists clear independent documentation on the circumstances in which they will work and how to use them properly in those situations.
So it is pretty easy to see that everyone is right.

We have REAL coyotes here in my Denver neighborhood. Got within 100 feet of three of them last night on my dog-walk.

These real ones have all their legs and actually move without wind. But the geese are still everywhere in nearby Washington Park.

Wow: just think of the possibilities... No legs-coyote can't chase the no legs-roadrunner, so he sets up a trap involving a 3D balancing boulder decoy and a 3D lifesize canyon decoy... And then...

Last time I visited the States, a couple I was talking to seemed much more concerned about Yall's Geese. All I had to do was say I was Canadian, and they'd launch into a rant about Yall's Geese.

I've never heard of Yall's Geese, but they sound like a pretty big problem! :)

It`s interesting to see the difference in how people view Canada Geese.

In the city I'm in, which is a migratory route (in Canada) when geese and goslings walk across the road, people stop and wait for them to cross. It's actually pretty cute.

Fauxote Bwahaha!
Here's how they work:
For a very short while they scare the geese, until those get desensitized.
After that the real coyotes have a huge hunting advantage.
Thus you get rid of the geese.

Depending on the disease you may get rid of the coyotes too.

Where I come from they shit on our waterfront and make the grass die, and there are far too many of them to just ignore them.

I kind of wish they had a predator. A winged predator. Perhaps some sort of eagle/wolf/iguana hybrid.
