Treasures from the AT&T video archives

Rick Prelinger sez, "My friend Robin Edgerton, whom some of you will know from WFMU and VH1, just helped AT&T select a bunch of its cooler films from the thousands in its archives to put online. The selection and quality are just great, and there are a bunch I've never seen. Check out MICROWORLD (with William Shatner), I.C. A SHRINKING WORLD, both on microelectronics, and DECORATING UNLIMITED, a 1961 film from Jerry Fairbanks, maker of the sublime ONCE UPON A HONEYMOON. This has long needed to happen."

  1. I’m watching the C.S. Long Lines film now. It provides a fascinating look at Ma Bell’s engineering prowess.

Lotsa nixie tubes, 11 minutes in.

  2. there’s so much there. they’ll be putting up three films per week for the indefinite/near future.

  3. Thanks for the link Cory. Like our anonymous friend said, we’ll be posting a good number of these pieces in the coming weeks. One of the most interesting things about a lot of these videos is that they provide great primers on how modern technology works, even though they were made 40, 50, 60 years ago.

Definitely check out Shatner in Microworld. Learning about Microchips has never. Been. So. Fascinating!

  4. These are great films, but much of the credit goes to Western Electric and Bell Labs. Neither of these units is part of today’s AT&T.

While I’m sure AT&T does great work, I wonder if they have the same commitment to research. Long Lines and satellite communication were great feats of American engineering.

Who is doing the research that will turn into the spectacular achievements of tomorrow?

  5. For a really far-out treat, check out the PARODY of AT&T’s films inside the (otherwise incredible) movie, “The President’s Analyst”. It’s spot on.
