I had the honor of meeting Chris Hondros through a mutual friend. He and I discussed the difficulties of being away from home to the extent that he and I both experienced. I however was and now ever more thankful that I have the privilege of doing what I love for a living without the near daily threat to my very life that he experienced. Chris lived a noble life and died doing what he loved and what he believed in. I do remember him saying however, that he was not going to be putting himself in war zones anymore. It is a sad day.

My condolences to his family and friends as well as to those of the other victims. Let us also not forget the message these people were there to convey to the world and the thousands of innocent lives also caught in the crossfire or directly targeted by the events that continue to unfold.

You cannot shoot photos like these safely, but I—for one—am grateful to everyone who goes so far to do just that. Gratitude and sorrow, mixed.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, Restrepo is a fantastic documentary shot by Tim Hetherington in the Korengal Valley. Unsettling stuff, especially in light of this news.
RIP.

This is very sad. I met http://rixstep.com/1/20110419,00.shtml on a photo-related trade fair (Photokina in Cologne) and attended his talk on war reporting. I admired him a lot and he seemed like an absolutely fantastic guy. He was a great inspiration for other photographers and journalists and I was very impressed by his pictures. Hearing about his death comes as a shock. Strange, since of course I knew what he was doing was dangerous...

Wow, powerful pictures of chaos there.

This really brings to light the risk and price of bringing us the news. We may "like" a tweet or small news item with a quick mouse click, but sometimes there's a very deep cost behind those 140 letters or an image on the net.

Working link: http://www.life.com/gallery/59501/chris-hondros-in-memoriam They changed the article title, "Chris Hondros: wounded in action" to "Chris Hondros: in memoriam," which apparently changed the URL. Link broke when he lost his life.
