These people are pinheads. There is nothing more that needs to be said. I know, it’s amazing. The real problem for Obama is political strategy - Trump's not dumb enough to believe any of this himself, so the question is what effects the birther stuff will have on the Republicans' ability to run a credible candidate in 2012. Trump's just shown that a third to half of the Republican party are willing to support a candidate who's only got one issue which everybody knows is a bogus lie, because they'd rather believe that than have to acknowledge that a black Democrat is President. If he keeps leading them around like trained animals, where will they go when he stops waving shiny things at him? Will it leave room for a more moderate Republican like Romney or Mitch Daniels to step in and say "time to let responsible adults run things again", or will it be a previously-unacceptable right-winger with a platform of "see, I'm less crazy than Trump's supporters!" If Obama let them keep going, would it tear the Republican Party apart, leaving a damaged former right wing and a hopeless farther right wing (Rove and his gang chased out most of the actual moderates, though some could come back up from the states.)
