Grace sez, "I am the organizer of the World's Largest Scavenger Hunt, held at the University of Chicago and we often ask for bizarre items; this year, I asked teams to: [Item 2: Re-cut Disney's The Lion King in to a sub-5 minute video that summarizes all five seasons of "The Wire"]. This video, by team MacPierce, is by far the greatest. I would describe it as a nominally accurate and adorably janky retelling of The Wire."

MacPierce Scav 11 - #002. Lion King Summary of The Wire (Thanks, Grace!)

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

The technology that links taxonomy and Star Trek

Just shockingly awful in conception and execution

  • Anonymous

This is hilarious. I honestly don’t understand how improving the sound quality would make it any funnier. In fact, the crude voice overs add to the juxtaposition in the video which is partially what makes it so damn great to begin with.

I was all excited to send this to my buddy who is a huge Wire fan like I am. I almost did it without watching first because BoingBoing rarely, if ever, lets me down, especially when it comes to mash ups like this. but oh man, am i glad i pre-screened it. That was the a piece of junk. sorry, it felt like zero effort was put into it. egads. I had to make and an account just to post how surprised I was at the lack of quality.

  • myake

    Nope. No good.

  • Ingmar

    Sounds blows.

  • GuyInMilwaukee

I lasted about 10 seconds into that. Some days the best place to find content is in the Submit section. Lots of great stuff gets left on the vine there IMHO.

  • eboy

Unless the creator of this video is beyond incompetent, the sound quality is obviously done like this on purpose. But even so, that’s no excuse. This is ridiculously bad, and not in an ironic, so-bad-that-it’s-good kind of way.

  • grimc

I’m guessing that since this was for a scavenger hunt, they slapped it together in half an hour. Not an excuse, just an observation, because sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeyitttttttt…

    • Anonymous

Yeah, this is what I always hated most about Scav when I was a U of C student. It’s nothing but great concepts and extremely disappointing executions. It’s even more depressing when you’re a participant.

  • Anonymous

    http://mightygodking.com/images/ac-wire.jpg was better.

  • Anonymous

    This was fantastic. “Deangelo”…”Avon”.

  • usonia

I’m sure in the context of a 72 hour scav. hunt it was…..oh who am I kidding, this was the BEST one? Ugh. Not unlike the time BB posted that video of those Russian teenagers killing a guy with a screwdriver with minimal warning.

  • Alvis

To those pointing out this was made under serious time constraints: I can write a song in 60 seconds, if I have to, but it’s going to be quite crap, and probably shouldn’t be shared with anyone as something worthy of praise.

  • Anonymous

Phht. Haters gonna hate. Obviously not a super-slick piece of work here, but I laughed. The very concept is inherently ridiculous, and I thought that this video was perfectly in keeping with the theme.

For everybody who’s complaining, find a better one, and I will concede the point.

  • quantumf

Interesting concept, lots of archetypes that could be crossed over. But poorly executed, and the sound mismatches made it unlistenable. Are you sure the right video was submitted?

Also, is ‘janky’ really a word?

  • gwailo_joe

Wow: so spoiled for ‘only the ~finest~ content!’ Fiddle-dee-dee you guys.

I laughed. But I appreciate effort and wit over execution and polish. And ‘janky’ is totally a word.

Also. . .I. . .I -like- the Lion King. I saw it on the big screen at the Alhambra Theatre when it came out (before it became a gym). . .with a date, mind you. And in Chicago I saw the stage play with my Mom. And later this month I’m going to see it with my gf. . .again. So no matter how much you like the Lion King

    I like it more.

And I’ve seen every episode of The Wire (needless to say, if you have one iota of interest in Americas urban sub-cultures, that’s the thing to watch: best show on T.V. so far.) Maybe you like The Wire more than me

But I like it pretty good.

so, shit: finally I have some connection with a BB link and everyone says it’s lame. Well. . .go ahead then. Made me laugh.

  • Chrs

    I am entertained.

  • Shart Tsung

    terribly done.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, for those who don’t know, UChicago scav hunt is a four-day, extremely ad-hoc affair, with 277 items (this year). Depending on when the team got to this item, those working on it may not have slept for 72 hours. Credit where credit is due.

  • Matt Maher

Just because it was made under time constraints doesn’t mean it should be shared with the world. Actually, I’d say BECAUSE it was made under time constraints it’s not worth watching. Perhaps if you were part of the event, the enjoyment you’d get would be from understanding how challenging it was, but I do not have that frame of reference.

And even if it were the funniest, most dead-on humor, it wouldn’t matter because it was unlistenable. To the people who enjoyed it: is your hearing already damaged or something?

  • RoloD

Too badly executed to be watchable. Move on please.

  • seyo

This is possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen posted on boingboing, and I’ve been a daily reader since 2003.

    • Anonymous

Haters gonna hate, but I think this is hilarious, and if janky is a word, then I too would describe it as “adorably janky”. Great job for kids who had 4 days and little warning to put this together, and a hilarious concept anyway.

  • Paynie

Yup. Not even funny a little bit. Oh well.

  • Anonymous

You guys do know this was done for a 72 hour scav hunt, right?

  • Alvis

Ow, my poor ears (and speakers)! What kind of sadist doesn’t normalize his sources?
