Our technobabbleist,
Dean, was informed by
Dannel Jurado about an interesting item on sale at Etsy. It is
a 2.5" cube designed to resemble a cubic meter of earth from the computer game Minecraft. The seller, Laketide, will construct as many as you please, for $10 each.

pet rock 2011.
I would rather have a cubic meter of gold.
The shipping cost is what’ll kill ya.
HOW HAVE I NOT THOUGHT OF THIS. I work in a comic book/ tabletop gaming store for gods sake!
diamond ore pl0x
I can make them for $9. Get at me.
Warning: Creepers may spawn on these blocks if not properly lit.
Perhaps you mean “come at me, bro”.
Also, your name is unintentionally amusing given what you posted and the fact that etsy sellers are often fronts for mass producers (often with engrish and linked to china).
I can vouch that this person is not a mass manufacturer, just some guy. I remember when he first posted these to reddit, he had no intention of selling them until we all showed interest in buying one and begged him to open an etsy store.

Thanks for the props. We really did have No intention of selling until people started to ask. The people asked though, so we started and we’ve slowly been expanding our line from the profits we make. Our shoppe generates a small profit that we turn into more products (thus the boxes and the newest item, our keychain). Soon we hope to expand to other cubes instead of just grass.
Anon #7, Mr. (or Ms.) Tsung did in fact mean “get at me”.
“Come at me, bro” is a posturing phrase, meant to signal a readiness to engage in some type of conflict.
“Get at me” is similar to “hit me up” or “let me know if you are interested”.
No Engrish involved. There is your lesson for the day.
That said, $10? The price is not right, Etsy seller.
These are actually fairly pricy to make. We hand cut the wood ourselves and the sealant is also pretty pricy. Then add the time it takes to make them, and shipping/packaging. It becomes fairly pricey.
Nope, not mass produced, just good ‘ol american made on my porch :)
It WOULD be pretty cool to have my own huge robotic facility though. Anyway, if you wanna make one for yourself and have any questions, just ask :)
$10 sounds about right. Looking at his photographic “how to”, it looks like it’s about 5-10 minutes to manufacture each block. Economy of scale would help out for this, but even for the internet this is a pretty low volume product.

Hey there! I’m actually the guy who made these :) Yeah – it is kinda an involved process because each cube gets sealed with 6 coats of seal and the flocking on the top gets treated differently because the sealant that works best for it is different than for the sides I’ve found. Also started cutting and sanding my own wood so that I could keep the cost somewhat low. If we could create an army of robots to make these, we could produce them cheaply and minecraft would rule the world. Mauauauaahaha
It takes a long while to actually make the blocks since we have to hand cut and measure the wood, then glue the sand and flocking on. The longest bit is probably sealing the cube.
If the price is too high, don’t pay it. If you want to do it yourself, have at it. If this dude can make money making Minecraft blocks, more power to him. Rock, rock on.
$10!? When I can simply head out onto my lawn and punch the ground for a few seconds? Now, if you were offering an obsidian or diamond block…
It’s… so square!
I’m impressed :)
For a moment there I thought, hey, for $0.26, it’s not a bad deal.
Why not sell small squares of areogel as water cubes. Make a whole line of minecraft items…until sued by the company. I would love to see them suing someone for selling wood.
I’m pretty sure Minecraft doesn’t use cubic meter as unit. That’d be a waist high cube. Or the miner is just really tall.
Actually that sounds about right, a door in the game is 2 blocks tall and your viewpoint is roughly at the window of a door, which would probably make the miner about 5’9″ or so if the blocks are a meter cubed.
Excellent work on the blocks. I’d like to see a glowstone block, or maybe a jack-o-lantern block with working lighting.
Since no one had a go at this yet:
Fake! I can’t see the… pixels?
Also, you should embed seeds into 10% of the blocks or something.
Very nice grasssss you have there. It’d be a shame if anything were to happen to it.
