Comixology is selling digital copies (for iOS and Android) of the old Gold Key Star Trek comic book for 99 cents. How cool is this logo design?

Why is he wearing a dish cloth/crocheted scarf around his waist?

    • Antinous / Moderator

      Pon farr juice.

    • LMA

Tragically, I know this answer. It’s because he’s about to face Kirk in the arena during the Pon Farr. In about two seconds, someone hands him the Anwoon, and then, the Lirpa. You need the dish towel to wipe your opponent’s blood off your hands after you’ve sliced him with the Anwoon. God, I’m such a Trekkie geek.

    Thanks for the info Anon

Isn’t the cover a frame from the TOS episode “Amok Time?” There’s your “Freak Impulsion” – Spock… Must… Mate!

    • wylkyn

No, no…that screenshot is from episode 45 – The Gamesters of Triskelion, where they had a flag football game against the Romulans. Spock had to fill in as quarterback when Kirk sprained his ankle. They won 13-3.

  • wormbaby

Anybody else feel bad for Mr. Sock? He is obviously under the effects of Pon farr. Why else would he be engaging in kal-if-fee (obvious because of the distinctive sash). Also what does any of that have to do with an implosion?

  • Antinous / Moderator

Also, Spock’s ears are so much hotter than any depiction of elf ears that I have yet seen. Why were the mid-sixties the golden age of pointy ears?

  • allium

That’s, um, lovely, but you can get pretty much every Star Trek comic printed between 1967 and 2002 in PDF format on a DVD for less than eighteen bucks from Amazon. They make it up in volume!

And speaking of volumes, GrymRpr, your image was Volume 1, Number 1. The cover with Spock demonstrating his G.I. Joe kung-fu grip is Volume 1, Number 6.

  • Jake0748

What the heck is an Impulsion?

  • penguinchris

The logo is fantastic, but the rest of the cover is pretty great too. Very subtly done, overall, even with the laughable text.

    Same month as Altamont.

Who owns the rights to this series?

Grew up just off Fulton St. during the 6o’s/70′s and a few of us local Kids would hang out at the loading docks & Get free issues of everything they had ran that month!

Flash forward to 2003: I scan in 61 issues of Gold Keys: Star Trek and make it available on the net ( P2P ) as CBR’s ( Comic Book Rar )

Now, I hope they didn’t use my scans lol ( Much less make a buck off of them ) And If they are PD I’ll Upload the whole set again and not charge a penny!

  • wgmleslie

So a mutant horse that wants to run is going to destroy the galaxy?

    • Dante

Well put, but now posting my oh-so-clever comment would seem redundant. I’d be interested in seeing how a freak impulsion is graphically rendered.

  • GrymRpr

After some checking, It seems they are using re-prints.

Thanks but I’ve already got one. :D

While some Golden Age comics (where the publishers did not renew the rights) have fallen into the Public Domain, I can guarantee that these late silver-age books, but most especially the rights to these characters, were renewed. The rights to the books, I believe, are currently owned by the Checker Book Publishing Group, but the characters are owned by Paramount and I don’t expect they will be going PD any time soon.

When you look at the value of this one comic at between $85.00 and $180.00, then getting copies for $0.99 is a pretty darn awesome deal.

  • Baron Karza

Looks like Spock is playing the invisible pinball machine of Gottlieb IV..

  • Godfree

Sorry, all I can think of is Spock saying “It was THIS LONG.”

  • deckard68

Engineering, we need an animated gif!

  • nanuq

Doesn’t Leonard Nimoy own the right to his image? It’s his face after all.
