As reality gets progressively more absurd and journalism standards get progressively lower, The Onion needs to become more absurd itself to stay ahead of the curve (but not so absurd that it ceases to be funny). So, new headlines from real newspapers that look like they belong in The Onion are likely merely further developed than their compatriots. The thing is, the reason why The Onion is funny is because it has realistic-style headlines (and realistic-style everything else) combined with stories that are only slightly more absurd than the real ones.
