On their site they call themselves a ‘social media’ company. What does that mean in this context?

I thought the whole idea of Kickstarter was to get money from folks to product products that were ALREADY designed. I’ve already been in on 2 projects that seemed pretty easy to complete and that the people said was ready to go only to find out (after it closed of course) that whoops, we have a) too many subscribers to produce it the way we planned or b) we found some “problems” in the design and are now going to redesign.

There has to be some fair way to balance the uncertainty of the project with the assurance that something is going to be provided in a timely manner.

I’m torn about this for those very reasons. On the one hand, I love the idea that people can record public servants doing evil things in public with less risk to themselves (Cops can TRY to arrest everyone, but they’ll fail. That’s not what I’m worried about). On the other hand, I do see the potential for abuse by people to do gross things.

Such as? If you don’t want someone recording something, why would you be okay with them seeing it at all? I don’t want someone recording me going to the bathroom, but I don’t want them seeing me go to the bathroom either.

Cameras get smaller and more ubiquitous daily. That’s a fact of reality and a trend no one is going to succeed in reversing. We can either all have access to them or leave them in the exclusive control of unaccountable authorities. If I’m in public, I’m in public. If I want privacy, I go somewhere private. If I’m being watched in public, I want a way to watch back. Better still, I want a triplicate redundant recording, wirelessly transmitted to secure storage, of every interaction I have with people I don’t know well enough to implicitly trust. That way if anything happens to me, I or my next of kin have a record of the events. We already record each other with our own memory. Cameras just have better recall.

Why do people talk as if authorities are the only perpetrators of malice?

When you think about this, you think, ‘social media’ with geeky wearers, however, anyone can buy these, including police and FBI. Including perverts at children’s venues, including government observers (check out the radicals you see at the meetings), including government informers in lands with repressive regimes (they can wear them to meetings of dissidents).

You want to invent a technology I would pay money for? Design something that provides freedom FROM cameras. Something that disables all cameras in a given zone. Maybe something like that TV disabling remote, or an infrared emitter that masks images, or anything that would stop these damn things working!

I remember a scene in David Brin’s ‘Earth’ where all senior citizens wore glasses like this, and instantly sent images to the police of any youth doing something they did not approve of. Tell me you really don’t want that kind of world.

We love it when cameras are used to record cops doing bad things, but we don’t trust people not to use cameras for creepy/snitchy purposes either.

As for snitching? If what you’re doing is snitchworthy, you shouldn’t be doing it in a place where you are vulnerable to photography of any sort.

I suppose a lesson you could take from this would be one that criminals have learned about guns: they can’t trace it to you as easily if you don’t buy it, so – steal it instead.

I assume, though, that would get me a good bollocksing, not to mention get me kicked in the bollocks…
