Quisp-Helmet

Shamptonian says:

I'm not sure if you saw in the comments on your Quisp Ring post awhile back, but I had this helmet in storage, so after finally moving down here from SF in May and after getting settled, I was able to dig it out.

I'm in between gigs and need rent money for next month, so I'm gonna list it on eBay. I have no idea what is it is worth, but based on the ring and some prelim research, I put an outrageously astronomical 'Buy it Now' price on it, so I wouldn't get low-balled on the auction in case it has some value. It's in great shape and works fine, so who knows!

Fully functional Quisp Helmet!

  • Cildar

That looks like a mad scientist tried to combine a diaphragm and an iud into a Super Birth Control Device!!

    • Anonymous

Believe me, if you are wearing that, it IS a birth control device.

  • franko

isn’t this one of those holy grails of cereal premiums? i’ve only ever heard RUMORS of this thing! O_o

  • Anonymous

Intense vivid Calvin and Hobbes flashbacks.
    Too much nostalgia to handle.

  • jaytkay

Damn, I had that AND the Quake helmet with a flashlight on the front. I could be a rich man!

  • nixiebunny

Why not just put a huge sign on your head that says, “Beat me up”?

I mean, c’mon. Propeller? Pink? Neck strap?

    • Anonymous

Sounds like nixiebunny’s mom only let him/her eat Grape Nuts! HAWHAW!

      • nixiebunny

No, I got to eat plenty of sugary cereal as a kid. I didn’t get many premiums, though.

My fondest memory of cheap plastic headgear was the Firestone fireman’s helmet with the little PA microphone in it. I dismantled it and learned all about audio amplifiers at the age of 9.

And now, 40 years later, I make and sell an audio amplifier. But it mounts on your bike instead of your head. Sounds better, too.

Oh, I was embarrassed to mention that Fireman’s helmet, nixiebunny. It did meet my approval and there are too many family photos of me sitting dumbly with that thing on, causing my own severe one-sided hearing loss….if only I’d dismantled it along with the big pink thing.

My dad was a distributor for a large grocery chain so I got all those nifty premiums, and I remember this helmet well….hated that chin strap, so the helmet was dismantled and used for parts. I never kept anything nice, as my mom reminded constantly. Think she was right, judging by the price fetched. Oh and the cereal was AWFUL!

What a GREAT birth control device. Patent it immediately!

  • irksome

Is it true that Quake was court-martialed for shooting his commanding officer in Vietnam?

  • VibroCount

I have a promotional cel created by the Jay Ward studio featuring Quisp (and Quake and other cereal/ad characters) as well as Rocky and other cartoon characters hanging in my library. It’s at http://webs.lanset.com/vibrocount/Resources/JayWard.jpg

The cap is new to me… very cool (and perhaps cooling).

  • Thorzdad

Quisp, of course, didn’t wear a helmet. Now, if you really want that authentic, prototypical rotor-head look, you need to get yourself a Beany Cap Copter…

FWIW, the spinners always ended up on the roof.

  • irksome

I would kill for this. But I wouldn’t spend $200+.

I still rue the day I realized my Cap’n Crunch treasure chest, membership card and flag had disappeared. My retirement fund…

  • Donald Petersen

Phooey. “Fully functional” means it actually makes the wearer fly.

    Pics or it didn’t etc.

  • rebdav

    Pee-hat from Zelda?

  • Anonymous

Still Don’t get why a quisp hat is used to represent “Document IDs” in Lotus Notes….

  • betatron

I think he could have done much better in a more focused auction, something with tables, chairs and an auctioneer, devoted to retroephemera. I’d have considered a “somewhat” greater sum. I have a couple quisp boxes, one topping a 1960′s vintage Bozo lamp a mere 6 feet from where i compose my boings.

When i was a kid i saved every cereal box toy that came into our home, kept sealed in it’s precious birth wrapper. An early seventies collection, it got lost by the time i went to college. My entire collection was not worth the elastic strap on Quisp’s helmet.

What a great score of nick nackery.

BB should have a flickr page of reader’s self-assessed Cool Things. We did this in talk.bizarre many years ago, sort of a travelling goody box.

  • Tom Fury

Does anyone remember another Quisp premium called the “cosmic cloudster”? It was a little gun that shot out something like powdered sugar or flour in a cloud. I wanted one REALLY bad, but I couldn’t stand to eat that much of that God-awful cereal to get the needed box tops.

  • laser

Ahhh the memories. My sister had one of these when we were kids. I had the Quake miner’s helmet. Very cool
