I played through the entire game and found it a perfect simulacrum of the similar games of old in that it was clunky and slow to play, took way longer than it should have, and at the end I still didn't really feel like I knew what happened.

I rate it a B- if you're fans of these games, D for everyone else.

Oh man, no replay value. It's a one time thing IMO.

But cute.

Scariest survival horror game I've ever played. After repeated panicked cursing, my wife told me that if I didn't calm down I was not allowed to play it.

'Sploit for the first moving creepy:
* Skirt him to the left and let him walk up and to the right. He's programmed to head for the rock.
* If you wait a bit after his spiel, he'll push the rock down a bit for you.
* You can get past him via the left, then the top, pretty easily (you're faster). Since he's moved the rock down for you, you can then start pushing the rock down, and he'll get caught on the wood to your left. It's less dramatic and terrifying, but effective.

The fast pony is still a problem, but as others have said, the _moment_ you can get past the rock, head down and far right to the exit. The rest is a snap in comparison.

So creepy.

Gave me a chill, which is remarkable stuff in my book. RTight up there with the baby-shadows from you-know-what. (Was that long path with a mournful pony at the end a tribute to Keiichirō Toyama?)

Try as I might, I couldn't get deflowered to save my life. Now I feel cheap, but unsatisfied. What a letdown. I thought this game was about making more little ponies.

lol

...

Wait, are you joking? (My sarcasm detector is too worn out for today.) I mean, think about it: this is the Internet.

It has been brought to my attention that the article-oid at the top has some not-quite-correct information.

It would be better to refer to the title of this game as "Story of the Blanks". I understand how one might mistake the stylized logo at the title screen for the title, though.

Well, it's hosted on Newgrounds, so anyone venturing into it without expecting a hidden ironic edge embeded somewhere in the game deserves a spanking.

That beeing said: I played right through it, and I still can't say if what I experienced was sincere fan-fiction or an elaborate, trollish joke. I mean that in the best way possible: it works on multiple levels.

I think it works because the Nintendo 8-bit and the MLP universe are both comforting constraints, wich we have become conditioned to associate with certain narratives.
And that also explains why some peeps here simply don't "get" this game: if you're not familiar with the conventions of the narrative, you don't get a WTF moment when those conventions are suddenly crushed.

Excuse my stupidity, but am I missing something? What actually happens in the house? What causes everything to go...well, creepy. And who was that pony you were following?

I can't work out what was going on in this game. I would appreciate it if someone could explain it to this potato of a mind I have :/

That is messed up. I don't like retro games, fanfic, or ponies (real or otherwise) - but this game deserves a play. Even in a very short amount of time, the game sets up a perfect WTF! moment that you'll replay just to see how you were ever suckered into its presumed innocence.

"Excuse my stupidity, but am I missing something? What actually happens in the house?"

My take was that you find a pony corpse in the fireplace of that house and it tears the scales from your eyes and you then see that the whole party was just a ghostly glamour cast over a scene of some sort of Jonestown-esque pony massacre, and then you have to escape all of the pony revenants trying to keep you in their horrible twilight afterlife.

Does it depend upon you following story logic instead of real life logic?

Like in real life, if someone says, "stay close to me," "don't wander off on your own," and "stay right there," maybe you'll take the advice.

But in a story, those are all cues for, "Obviously I should wander off and find out what happens in the woods at night."

I had already tried to wander off, and tried to talk the to pony that crosses the screen.... but hadn't worked out that I would be able to follow him. Furiously pressing z as he scarpered wasn't getting me anywhere! I did make it to the end of the game. Eventually. /noob.

Well, that was pleasantly creepy. It reminded me of how when I was a kid, some games were scarier for their 8-bit graphics because they left so much to the imagination.

*Shudder*

Reached the part where you have to cross the village without being touched by the black ponies. The second one is hard enough but the third homes in perfectly at twice your speed. Might have been an interesting game, but insofar as I can tell, it's impossible to get past that point.

The trick is that when you're pushing the box down there's a narrow strip to the right. You don't have to push the box all the way down, but only to the point to where you can go into the narrow strip. Then go into the strip and make a break for the exit. You should be able to get out, and at that point the rest shouldn't be much more trouble, just avoid the rest of the ponies.

Pretty much what Locien said. Once you know that the exit is at the lower right, you should be able to outrun him.
