You know, I kind of felt that I was getting biofeedback that I needed to step up on the vegetables. It tasted nasty, so that's why I used the Ovaltine and peanut butter to mask the flavor.

Of course, I'm pretty sure I was burning more than your average 2,000 calories a day. That blenderful kind of felt like I'd eaten nothing after a couple of hours had passed.

I'd totally drink that down with a couple of amendments: cow milk instead of soy milk, and leave out the tomatoes & spinach, please. And up the peanut butter amount while we're at it.

That blenderful would keep me working all day long. I'll eat the spinach by itself, afterward. If I must.

I love these posters from the 40s and 50s. They look kind of artistic even though it is pure marketing. They remind me of my childhood, even though I am younger than that. Skinny Fast

My taste buds would have liked it more if it were yogurt...however I guess I've eaten worse things.

Now that I think about it, my breakfast when I was working as a pedicab operator was pretty gross by most people's standards. I needed to find a way to put more calories in than I was burning off.

Pedicab Smoothie: In a blender, combine--

2 cups soy milk
2 eggs
2 bananas
1 cup of yogurt
1 generous handful of broad leaf spinach
1 medium handful of cherry or grape tomatoes
1 heaping teaspoon of creamy peanut butter
2 scoops of Ovaltine chocolate flavor
1 generous handful of berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, or what have you)

Blend until the consistency reaches a level capable of drinking. Careful, it is an entire blender full.

Then, at work, I would have a buttered bagel (any flavor) and some caffiene.

I love the "Eat the Carp!" poster from 1911 in the online exhibit preview. Interestingly enough, the government is still thinking along those lines in dealing with the current invasion of Asian carp in the Mississippi watershed. Something tells me that Americans, like in 1911, still aren't too keen on eating carp. Attempts are being made to export the fish frozen to China, but the Chinese like their carp extremely fresh.

"Carp jelly, an ancient Swedish dish, is delicious".

One of the government posters at the site urges communities to start a school lunch program, and offers to help.

The agency offering to help is the War Food Administration. We're talking 1942. They gave a enough of a fuck about children's' health to start a program like that while the whole country was mobilizing for a two-front world war.

Try that today and the Fox News talking point of the day would claim that school lunches were designed to force Muslim style food and mind-control drugs on our youth. And the fucking tea baggers would put a school lunch elimination rider on the debt ceiling bill.

The diet plate pretty much everywhere in the 60s was a naked burger, a scoop of cottage cheese and a canned peach half. Artfully garnished with a leaf of iceberg lettuce.

Oh, hey, an opportunity to link to a picture of my breakfast from a few Sundays ago:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stefan_e_jones/5932118909/in/photostream

"Pep" and "Vigor," huh? Nice meaningless words, like today's "nutritional support," used to describe any number of nutriceutical snake-oil products.

(Hey . . . Disqus decided to treat the linked-to picture as an "attachment." I didn't know it could or would do that.)

(Not that I'm ashamed of my breakfast, mind you.)
