Spotted at Renovation, the World Science Fiction Convention in Reno: this killer tiki-themed Dalek. I didn't catch the artist's name -- anyone know it? Leave a comment and I'll update the post.

Update: From the comments, Michelle informs, "Made by Kevin Roche. It also won Best in Show at the Gallifrey One (Doctor Who convention) masquerade earlier this year."

Tiki Dalek

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Is that a Cthulhu tiki totem in the background?

I too want to know more about the Cthulhu tiki totem in the background!

As mentioned slightly up-thread, it’s not a Cthulhu tiki, it’s an Ood.

Now it all makes sense. It did take them a while to master stairs.

That is an Ood (also from the Doctor Whoniverse) in the background. The “boys” are a set of 6 SF Tikis by Hugo-nominated artist Maurine Starkey, who hand-painted them on tubular cardboard concrete forms for the Tiki Dalek’s builder, Kevin Roche

    • That_Anonymous_Coward

I think the tikis are awesome.

  • Glippiglop

Wow.  All this needs is that posh sample of Mr Handy inquiring ‘Can I get you a drink Sir?’ and you’d have perfection.

  • StCredZero

IN-E-BRI-ATE!  It works both as the Dalek talking to itself, reminding itself of it’s function, and as an imperative, an order to all of the squishy humanoids wandering about.

    A Dalek’s Favorite drink.  A Sonic Screwdriver.

    1 1/2 oz vanilla vodka
1 1/2 oz Blue Curacao liqueur
    6 oz clear lemon-lime soda

Half-fill a clear 12 oz. glass with ice. Pour 1.5 oz Vanilla Vodka, 1.5 oz Blue Curacao, and 6 oz. CLEAR lemon/lime soda over the ice. Stir lightly, and Enjoy!

    • KanedaJones

I would have thought that the one drink they’d refuse to make for you, and then they’d unceremoniously escort you from the lounge.

  • Mister44

This guy would be great as an extra for a Dalek themed porn script I am working on.

Tiki Dalek has also been at Westercon and Baycon this year.   I happened to be in the right place at the right time at one of those cons to see Kevin and Andrew disassembling it to take it home after the con was over – given some time and a power drill or sonic screwdriver, it folds down into reasonably compact pieces.  The design has evolved quite a bit since it was first made, so it’s more stable, more comfortable to ride in, easier to assemble and disassemble, and has more functional parts (for instance, the arms can do more than the initial version.)
