No worries, I'm confident that I'm not racist toward Asians...though I recognize that saying that is almost like saying "some of my best friends are..." My comparison of China vs. Japan is more related to the history of their industrialization than any view that either country has engrained copy-cat rip-offs as part of their national identity. China will grow out of it just as Japan did in the 1970's, and became an even more formidable competitor. Note that I spoke generally about rip-offs occurring at that time in history, rather than specifically pointing at this song (though see below).

As far as covers vs. rip-offs in music, there are covers and there are covers, regardless of who is doing the cover version. For example, Elvis didn't add much value to many of the black songs he popularized for white audiences, other than mass marketing. I don't think they quite fall to the level of rip-offs, because he did have the talent to add some of his own flavor.

As far as "Summertime" goes, this version seems to be a note for note copy of the Big Brother and the Holding company version from Cheap Thrills. She even tries to mimic Joplin's delivery, and actually succeeds most of the time. But she doesn't have Joplin's vocal depth and maybe even misses some of her range. And then the cover seems to try to reference the Woodstock cover (not necessarily the band's fault). If this isn't a rip-off it comes perilously close.

On the other hand, this also comes from a time when everybody in Northern California (as well as other places) was starting a band and covering the same songs. And based on the album cover, there's a fair chance the production team was actually aiming for note-for-note covers, so it may not be the band's fault they fell into the "uncanny valley" of cover versions. If these guys were lucky enough to score an album deal, more power to them.

Your description actually made this sound like it was going to better than it actually was. I was all geared up for some crazy japanese noise screaming but it never amounted to more than some lady just singing like anyone would expect a singer to do over a slightly different, bluesier version of the song we've all come to know and love over the years. Thanks for the letdown, Eark.

I got about 3 seconds into the vocal before my dog got very upset, barking like something was terribly wrong, and I had to stop. To be fair, he also does that with any shoegazer noise that I play for him.

Sometimes I go out in the city streets (I'm a cave troll you know) and sudden realisation that every single person around me is absolutely naked under their clothes makes me dizzy. I then go back to the cave (I work there too) and stay in this NSFW shock for a week or so. And then it repeats. During the winter it's slightly better, but in a summer when on the beach - it's terrible. I don't only think that they are naked - I see it. Those bare backs, hands, faces. Absolutely terrifying. That's why I am pro-burqa. For everybody. This way you can always pretend it's not a terribly naked person hidden inside, it's a golem. Or a robot. Let's pretend we have robots advanced enough to go shopping for us in burqas. It will be the new era of absolutely SFW or even SFL world. Pure and innocent.

Flower Travellin' Band did some really great stuff later on with Joe Yamanaka - their album is Sartori is a heavy metal classic and Joe was one of the great singers (RIP last month!). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDBdMnkcx0E

Phrasebook _anything_ is a bad idea most of the time ;-).

Swedish is quite challenging phonetically, even for speakers of languages that are a lot closer than English.

I tried using phrasebook Swedish with a Minnesota accent when I was in Sweden some years back. Fail... the restaurant person asked me what I wanted in English (I had luggage, and it was a train station, so obviously I was a tourist, but all I wanted was a large beer - could I have mangled the vowels that badly? Apparently yes :-)

As Dan Morrison said, the singer does sound a lot like she's imitating Janis Joplin's vocals, but the instrumentals were interesting, and pretty much every female singer in the Western world has done a cover version of this tune. Thanks for a nice spacey Freaky Friday.

The arrangement here is a direct copy of the Janis Joplin version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrOA7dLyZlM . This version is only 15% more out-there than Janis had already taken it.
For the Summertime fans (I like to collect all the covers I can find of it) the cover that I still think is pretty awesome is by "Sylvester" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsoWvXDMo1c with its big beats and scat

Yeah, this song is as bad as the cover is good...

I've always been one who considered the '60s music to be a major downturn in the quality of music.

Before that, the cool music that the whole country could get behind was black music - jazz, soul, doo wop, motown, girl groups, etc. This era represented the ascendancy of white musicians...and man, it just doesn't compare. Black music IS the heart and soul of American music, and the cornerstone of American cultural expression.

B) If you are at a place that things that looking at images of naked people is worse than any other sort of Internet activity, you ought to find a new place of employment.

If only the originality of the album cover was representative of album content.

Its not that they actually bad, they aren't, but its been too long.

Listen to The Tokyo Metpod for an example of how far the Japanese have progressed.

If Yuya Uchida & the Flowers (内田裕也＆フラワーズ) were to revisit the original album, they could do such a better job of it now.

It was about how these bands covers are analogous to the consumer products also made by the culture, which were rip-offs.

He didn't quite say what you said he said, and since you seem to be taking issue, and claim not to be trolling, I hope you take this advice in good cheer. Good Cheer!

Also, holy screeching banshee batman!!!

Not to be a sour puss and a troll but...

Why is it when a western musician does another musician's song it is a 'cover' but when an Asian does the same thing it is a 'blatant rip-off'?

She sounds more like a zombie Yoko Ono than Joplin - or perhaps some sort of cat-like Dr. Moreau abomination. As to the arrangement - I guess I kinda hear what you mean, but sort of thing was also fairly common during this era wasn't it?

I'm not accusing anyone of racism - so pleeeaaaase relax. I'm not trying to create extra headache for the moderators.

Seems like Uchida had a penchant for nude album covers. I have the Flower Traveling Band's CD reissue of "Anywhere" and the cover shows the members roaring down the road naked on their Honda Hogs. They cover 21st Century Schizoid Man and House of the Rising Sun on this one. This album cover is also used for the cover of a book about Japanese rock bands of that era.
