    I’ve found it useful now and again in computer animation work to ‘unwrap’ those patterns into strips using filter > polar coordinates > polar to rectangular.

    It’s also possible to planar-project them onto hemispheres, push in a little to hide the horizon seam, and rotate the ‘planet’ +/- 10 degrees or so, as I did with this photo of the full moon.
