Etsy seller Bionicbuttercup makes "haunted mirrors": "Originally a picture frame, the glass was painted with a special paint that allows it to be part functioning mirror, part gateway to the paranormal (or, rather, you can just see the picture of the creepy kid behind the glass.)"

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

It would be interesting if it showed better under less light.  You could have a dim light on, somebody walks in and sees it, turns on a brighter light and can’t see it anymore…

These are much nicer than those pictures where the painting changes into a skull based on teh angle you view it, since you could in theory put any picture behind the missor glass and really freak out relatives by putting a portrait of a more recently deceased ancestor in it.

Are all images of little girls regarding you with serious visage “creepy”?   What if their brothers are behind them making rabbit ears fingers?  This is something that must be studied intensively for misogynistic creepiness factors ..yep

“Are all images of little girls regarding you with serious visage “creepy”?”

What would be really creepy is to take a picture of a friend, digitally age it, use that for the mirror and then hang it where they’ll look in it.

You can put retro-reflective material behind the image and use a more opaque mirror to make it so that the image only shows up in flash photographs.

    Spooky.
