		<description>The odd part is that, even though this looks at a glance like a classic rear view with tail fins, that&#039;s actually the front of the car, and the outboard fins are... canards?  The rear has a single central rudder.

It says that the director of  the home-study course was Harley J. Earl. I doubt that he had much hands-on involvement with the correspondence lessons, but whatever your opinion is of tail fins this guy was the real deal. He was first trained by his father, who was a classic coach builder who made the transition to custom automobile body design and manufacture. The younger Earl was an industrial designer who pioneered modern automobile design techniques.
