As noted previously on Boing Boing, Oakland's mayor Jean Quan disclosed today that she was one of 18 elected officials on a conference call last Thursday organized by the United States Conference of Mayors to discuss local responses to OWS around the US. The New York Times reports that Portland mayor Sam Adams says there were two such calls “to share information about the occupying encampments around the country.” An AP item is here.

If there were no calls to share information on how to deal with Occupy then one has to wonder what these officials were discussing, considering that the call was specifically about responding to Occupy around the country. What did they talk about then? Golf? The weather?

Anyone have a list of the locations?

Funny, the OWS people do all their organizing out in the open. Who’s hiding what, exactly?

And once again, what’s wrong with US mayors sharing information as to how to deal with squatters?

Why start cracking down on the homeless now? Hmmmm? prejudicial application of the law, much Joseph?

Also, you are literally saying the exact same thing word for word in all these threads. This runs contrary to the sites policies, and imho, the guidelines of polite conversation. Friendly tip.

“And once again, what’s wrong with US mayors sharing information as to how to deal with squatters?”
you’ve obviously never been homeless. my house got raided 2 hours ago. fuck you.

Maybe not, but they weren’t discussing squatters, they were discussing protestors.

  • adamnvillani

Yeah, God forbid one mayor call up another and ask, “Well, how are things going in your neck of the woods and what do you think would be a good approach to this?”

  • pigpen23

update: they came back but only for a few minutes. interestingly, this has never happened to me while living at a squat. i pay rent and live in a small apartment but i guess someone ran into a nearby building and they got the wrong one. this is what most people fucking experience daily. FUCK! i’m seriously shaking with anger right now

I don’t have a problem with the conference. I think it’s a sensible thing to do in general. I believe they groupthinked up the wrong solution, though. It’s the cities that are on the shitty end of the economic mess, dealing with all the problems caused by the loss of the middle class and local wealth. They should support the OWS movement, because it should be their movement as well. IMO, IANAMayor, etc.
