Isaac Krauss's octopus table is a fantastic piece of work -- I want a giant brass octopus for my house!

Then, while taking his first bronze sculpting course, Krauss unearthed the idea and set to work. He admits to having had very little experience working with bronze, but felt that stretching beyond his limits would push him as an artist. The most difficult aspect of this project, according to Krauss, was the detailed suction cups and applying them to the octopuses eight arms. For this, a close friend of his helped him out and also assisted in carrying through with the project till its completion. Overall, it took 1500 hours of work and $5000 to create this marvelous piece of art.

I write books. My latest is a YA science fiction novel called Homeland (it's the sequel to Little Brother). More books: Rapture of the Nerds (a novel, with Charlie Stross); With a Little Help (short stories); and The Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow (novella and nonfic). I speak all over the place and I tweet and tumble, too.

Why do geeks love octopuses ? Is it that they’re smart ?

    • graou

I can’t speak for the geeks but octopuses are smart, stealthy, powerful, sexy, and they can be used as wonderful wigs. Why not love them ?

Brass: check.  Octupus: check. My search for an xmas gift for my buddy Capt. Nemo is over.

    Nice.

A right bugger to keep clean though.

    • rabidpotatochip

      Yeah, everything sticks to it.

    • Marktech

I have to admit, that does look stunning.

A right bugger to keep clean though.

Just keep it covered in coffee sacks.

I like the character that corrosion adds to bronze, brass, copper, and silver pieces.  I found last week that it can go too far, when I had to clean a brass bowl and found that deep pitting had obscured part of the original detail.

I bet that piece is coated with a clear lacquer to eliminate those problems though.

A stellar piece!  I would say it’s a master work.

That does look pretty sweet! Does anyone have any experience with the site it’s from, “mymodernmet”? It looks like it might be my kind of place.

Paging PZ; paging PZ. Would PZ Myers please pick up the white courtesy squidliphone.

  • digi_owl

I think Peter Watts may find this interesting.

  • arikol

    really cool.
I somehow envision the table on top being made from driftwood (or other distressed wood), possibly multiple pieces to get something that fits the motif. Glass seems somewhat mundane when compared to that amazing sculpture.

  • Dan Allard

Wyland has a fantastic piece that’s similar but in colour & with a bit of reef surrounding it.  Bronze as well, I believe.

  • Dan Groom

Find a way to 3d print these for cheapness and I’ll totally buy one

In there a Giant Octopus is busting through the wall, its tentacles go into the floor and come out as supports for all the computer display tables.

  • Alan Goulding

That’s epic beyond. It’s now on my Xmas list if anyone’s interested. Anyone?

  • vtwahine

Holy cephalopod!  This makes me want to remove all furnishings from my living room, put this thing in the center, pile pillows around it, lie back, and marvel at the existence of biological suction cups.
