Thanks for highlighting this gem from Kathryn. You’re completely right about the shimmering pedal steel. It brings to mind the equally excellent Maryann Fennimore circa ‘Mary and the Strays”.

Post is misleading. She wasn’t Neko’s replacement. Neko just couldn’t always perform with the band on their live performances so Kathryn joined the band to help out in that regard. Neko hasn’t left The New Pornographers but Kathryn joined as a full time member and performed on Neko’s last solo album as well.

As far as I know the only lead vocals she has done were for the song Failsafe and shared with AC on Adventures in Solitude. She has commented that she and Neko have similar voices and it is sometimes hard to tell which of them is singing which part on a song but her voice is a bit softer.

Loved it! And I’m a huge Neko Case fan. Ms. Calder has a wonderful voice. The song is simply great. Currently on 4th replay and counting.

She also used to be in a band called Immaculate Machine (at least I think it’s ‘used to be’). By coincidence I’m wearing and Immaculate Machine t-shirt right now. I never saw them, I found the t-shirt at Value Village a few months ago, but they did have some pretty catchy tunes (look on CBC Radio 3) and she does have a great voice.

But here’s a great ‘Black Cab Session’ in London, with Carl and Kathryn looking rather jet-lagged but still giving a lovely performance:
