Bakshi was freaking great. He did more to legitimize creator driven animation than nearly any other name in the 2oth century. Yes, he got famous for using Fritz the Cat, R. Crumb's creation, yes Wizards borrowed heavily from Vaughn Bode (who he was friends with). But those films are great and the pure Bakshi creations are even better. Coonskin and Heavy Traffic are amazing as is Fire and Ice, his collaboration with Frazetta.

He's the mind behind the New Adventures of Mighty Mouse. The show that single-handedly saved Saturday Morning Cartoons from the stilted, humorless, moralizing dreck that had plagued the lineup for years. He got animators excited about ANIMATING again. John Krisfulusi, the creator Ren & Stimpy, got his biggest break from Bakshi.

It kills me that everyone falls in love with bland, overproduced Disney films, while Bakshi, working perpetually under budget and unapologetically cartoony gets constantly labeled a hack. Its utter bullshit.

Bakshi's work is OK, but I think he deserves a LOT of crap for BLATANTLY ripping off the artwork of Bode for his highly derivative movie Wizards.
