Don’t really know anything about these, but there are definitely some currently on display at LACMA, LA’s art museum next to the tar pits. I was there a couple weeks ago. They’re very striking.

I don’t think these are the actual 17th Century images. The linked article and the Amazon book description aren’t entirely clear to me about the process going on here, but the brainpickings link describes these as *based* on these historical illustrations:

“a striking collection of rare, abstract Tantric paintings based on 17th-century illustrations ”

And then in the Amazon description it describes these as contemporary images:

“These contemporary, anonymous drawings from Rajasthan are unlike the more familiar strands of Tantric art.”

So, I wonder if these look like 20th Century art because they are?
