It is an exceptionally vapid non-story and could be used as evidence that Murakami has slipped into senility (or at least lost the ability to create and tell a story). Ever wonder why there is a 3rd book?  Well, the Japanese public would have burned him alive if he left it off so poorly at the end of the second book. After reading 1Q84, you will feel as though Murakami punched you squarely in both eyes.  You have been warned. Murakami is great, but 1Q84 is a horrible let down.  Do not waste your time reading the novel.
